Dr. R.Satish Kumar is the Principal at Sengunthar College of Engineering, Namakkal Tamil Nadu. Having more than 20 years of experience in Industry and Education, he has published 11 books, 4 patents and 41 research papers in International & National Journals and Conferences. He is a corporate member in the Electrical Engineering Division of Salem Local Centre, Institution of Engineers and is a Life Member of IEI and ISTE. Also, he has received several grants from Center and State Government Agencies for the development of Engineering Students.

What would you say are your responsibilities towards the students?

“The campus culture of innovation and research is one of my responsibilities” 

The main focus of my work is on the operational functions of Sengunthar College of Engineering. Activities are student-centered with a focus on holistic development to help students become self-reliant. The SAFE - Sengunthar Association for Future Entrepreneurs - Entrepreneurship Development Cell was established to promote entrepreneurial skills and inspire students to prove their concepts. Industry-related activities and exposure are provided to students through internships, core skill development programs, etc.

How are the programs at your institute ensuring industry “best practices”?

“Internships, in-plant training and consulting services are provided in accordance with MoU’s”

Sengunthar College of Engineering conducts a gap analysis of the university curriculum and industry skills requirements. From the First Semester onwards, students receive progressive training. Our education process is continually monitored to ensure the students' knowledge acquisition matches their academic requirements and industrial needs. To make our student’s industry ready, we invite Managing Directors and Industrial Experts for interaction. We sign MOUs with industries to provide internships, in-plant training, and consulting services.

What does the Institution do to ensure quality education online in these turbulent times?

“Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) and class Monitoring committee”

Students’ and Teachers' performance is continuously monitored and assessed by the internal quality assurance cell (IQAC). This helps ascertain the quality of the teaching-learning process. Theory classes are conducted online and Lab classes are conducted through virtual labs. In addition, students and staff members are continuously encouraged and motivated to attend courses available in SWAYAM, NPTEL Platforms and MOOCs.

How did you train the faculty to deliver the newly designed programs to the students?

“Make the most of digital tools and training programs”

The faculty members are continuously motivated, encouraged and periodically trained to use advanced online teaching tools. This is done through online faculty development programs with demonstrations of Virtual Labs, Google Meet, MS Teams, etc.

What are the job prospects at your institution in the near future?

“We provided 90% of placements to the 2020 – 2021 passed out batch”

Sengunthar College of Engineering provided 90% of placements to the 2020-2021 passed-out batch. Our top recruiters are Trimed Medical Systems, Biocom Medical System, Siemen Medical System, WIPRO GE, Apollo Hospital, KMCH Hospital, IQRA Hospital, Aster Hospital, etc. We have started new courses like B.E. Robotics and Automation and B.Tech. Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.

How do you tend to establish healthy academic relations in a virtual environment?

“A strong mentorship program to establish a positive habitat”

Students are assigned counsellors and mentors with a mentor: mentee ratio of 1:15. Across the campus, social media groups have been formed for staff members, students and alumni. The Grievance redressal meets regularly to provide students with general and academic counselling to ensure their physical and mental well-being. In order to ensure one-to-one interactions with the students, management authorities, principals and heads of the department meet periodically.

What valuable advice would you like to give the students for a prosperous career ahead?

“As a career progresses, it is necessary to accept and practice changes” 

The rapid advancement of technology requires that students be globally competitive enough to keep up. Students should practice interpersonal skill development with the connected stakeholders during college days. And apply the skills they have acquired to complete mini-projects, seminars, workshops, projects, and participate in product competitions.
