SA Engineering College

Dr. Kumarasamy GS is the Principal at SA Engineering College. He is a visionary leader who believes in keeping students abreast to the current industry standards. He firmly believes in the actions to overcome challenges and making step-by-step progress towards achieving success. Read here what he has to say in his interview.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Learning and exploring new aspects makes me curios”

I am an inquisitive person, and since childhood, I was always fascinated by learning and understanding new things. Education space is one place where there is constant change in terms of syllabus, technology, students, etc. and as a teacher; I try to keep myself updated about all the changes that happen in the industry. The joy and satisfaction I receive from teaching young members of society make me very much connected to the Education Sector.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“I ensure that every team member plays a pivotal role in the development of the institution”

It is my responsibility to make everyone feel comfortable in their roles and deliver the highest quality output without much pressure from either side. Only when a staff member is pleased can the process of knowledge transfer to the students flow smoothly. A relaxed mind is a creative mind. Engineering is a very dynamic course, and there are multiple ways to solve a problem. Only a creative mind can identify and solve pain most quickly and efficiently. By keeping the college vision and mission in mind, I ensure that we create better engineers for tomorrow.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your College?

“The scenario today comes down to the survival of the fittest”

The administration is proactive in dealing with the ever-changing environment, especially the needs of society. It is not the strongest of the species that survives, or the most intelligent that stays. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. In this highly competitive education sector, with reducing demand for engineering seats, only those colleges that adapt and teach the industry's latest changes as a part of the syllabus survive. SAEC has introduced several new programs such as AI, Data sciences, Robotics, and Automation without losing the focus on the fundamentals.

Regarding Marketing this year, apart from our usual offline marketing activities, we are also doing some campaigning in the digital space. We are working with a couple of online education field vendors and again doing some in-house digital marketing.

What was your vision for the college? Has it evolved over time, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?

“The autonomous status has ensured numerous possibilities”

My vision is to make this great institution a self-sustaining and Autonomous institution. We had got the Autonomous status from UGC and Anna University last year. It has ensured us the freedom to design the curriculum, introduce new programs, decide about the best evaluation system, and develop elaborate procedures to provide the right quality teaching/learning processes.

In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your institute?

“We ensure our curriculum is relevant and aligned with the current industry standards”

With outcome-based accreditation, many college programs have been accredited by NBA and NAAC with ‘A’ Grade. This accreditation process is a long one with multiple checkpoints and factors based on which the grading is done. These calibrating factors are in line with the international criteria for accreditation, and only a handful of institutes in the country are awarded ‘A’ Grade accreditation. Hence, with this accreditation status, students have an assurance that the quality of education is excellent at SAEC, which is the first step towards having a fantastic career.

How does the curriculum at S.A.Engineering College ensure the best practice of industry?

“The curriculum in our college is highly dynamic and agile”

Being an Autonomous institution, we have the power to design our curriculum, and at SA Engineering College, it is designed to suit the industry's needs strictly. We follow an efficient approach when it comes to teaching. Other than the knowledge transfer, many skill development programs are undertaken so that our students will be an asset when they enter the industry. Many MOUs with leading corporate companies have been signed. We offer each student ample opportunities to secure and internship in their field of interest and the company of their choice. Apart from this, we take our students on frequent Industrial visits where they are exposed to the practical side of their studies, and they get to interact with actual engineers working in the field. We also have regular guest lectures as part of the curriculum. Stalwarts in their respective fields take these. This way, students who study here get 100% exposure to industry and prepare themselves accordingly before he finishes his course.

“With the available quality human resources and ever increasing infrastructure, we have been producing future ready, innovative, high quality engineers since the last 20+ years”

What is the top priority for your Institute over the next 10 years?

“We want to enhance our teaching-learning process”

Our top priority is to improve the Teaching/Learning processes, the introduction of Programs in Emerging areas, the introduction of industry-ready curriculum and syllabus, and various quality procedures, including Accreditation and outcome-based Education. Another aspect is to incorporate multiple Examination Reforms and enhance the Placement, facilitating Higher education opportunities, and Entrepreneurship activities among the students.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?

“Focus on what you want to achieve”

My advice to the current youth and aspiring students is, whatever comes in your path, concentrate on your goal, and your focus should only be on achieving it. The advent of the digital age has become a considerable advantage for the current generation. You don’t have to be an elite member of society to learn. The internet has all the information as long as you have a thirst for knowledge. You do not have to be a talented or gifted person to achieve your life goals. What we call Talent is a direct result of hard work. Work hard without looking back, and one day you will definitely be successful.
