Dr. Abhishek Basu is the Dean Academics & Assistant Professor (Department of ECE) RCC Institute of Information Technology. Dr.Basu has 14 years of teaching experience. Bringing the vast knowledge and experience with him, he aims to deliver experiential learning via practical methodologies. Read here what he has to say in his interview.

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“Teachers are revered in our society”

Teachers get to work with the future of the nation, and teachers know they are doing a job that only few could do. Also, the job profile provides a sense of belonging. Every day is unique for a teacher as it gives us a new experience. The profession gives an enriching experience and a sphere to learn from various sources.

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style?

“An important aspect of becoming a good leader is to be a good listener”

I intend to share responsibility with my team. I respect my team, listen to their ideas, and inspire them when needed. I like to encourage my team to set goals that directly align with the Institute’s plans because I believe everyone should participate in the process.

How do you strategize about the key programs and plans for the marketing and administration of your school?

“We make sure to opt for the best possible strategies”

I would highlight our students' and alumni's achievements, the best-in-class infrastructure, and the rich pool of faculty members. Also, one strategic point of marketing would be that RCCIIT is the only self-financing college run by an autonomous society formed by the State Government. Unlike 70 other self-financing colleges, the BOG and BOM of this institute is constituted by the Higher Education Dept. (HED), GoWB. The Special Secy., HED is the Chairman of BOM, while Director Technical Education (DTE) is the Chairman of the BOG of RCCIIT as approved by the HE Ministry. The Govt. has made a substantial contribution in terms of land and fund in establishing the institute.

How does the curriculum of your Institute ensure the best practice of industry?

“We make note of necessary skills required to build a dynamic personality of students”

Institute follows guidelines and curriculum prescribed by MAKAUT, W.B, i.e., the affiliating University. To develop abilities and skills (cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domain) among students, University introduced necessary additions and changes in the syllabus from time to time. The best practice of University includes:

  • Choice Based Credit System (CBCS)
  • Mandatory Additional Requirements (MAR)
  • Separate MOOC for credit point earning.
  • Continuous Assessment process etc.

Additionally, to fill up the Industry academia gap for the students, RCCIIT organizes specialized training by industry experts based on need analysis. Moreover, students actively take part in different hackathons and prototype completion to improve their efficiency and skill. Students do in-company internships in 3rd year and as part of placement offers to get industry best practices.

What was your vision for the Institute? Has it evolved over time, and how far along in implementing that vision are you?

“We are striving to achieve, and we are on the right path”

Our vision was to impart knowledge and skill of the highest quality by applying technological innovations via specialized tools for generating a technical workforce. As required in industries, research organizations, and academia, we aim to inculcate the importance of interdisciplinary research and development that directly impacts our country's social needs.

What would you like people to know about your Institute they may not know?

“There are many verticals that are yet to be explored”

We have quality faculty, well-equipped laboratories, and a good placement record that contributes to the reputation. The institute bears the legacy of erstwhile RCC, Calcutta (now NIELIT) in JU. The State Govt. is directly controlling this college, which follows all rules (pay and allowance of faculty, reservation of SC/ST/OBC, free-ship, etc.). The institute was one of the best performing institutes of the state and the country in the World Bank-MHRD sponsored TEQIP-II project.

What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education according to you ?

“Placements and lack of opportunities are some prevalent challenges currently”

  • Uncertainty in placement due to global economic/pandemic recession – the IT companies are still cautious in hiring workforce .
  • The rapid change in technology causes an increasing gap between industry need and academic output.

What are some plans that you’re currently (or will be) designing for Institute’s international affairs and/or students?

“Our aim is to bring global learning experience and exposure at our institution”

Already there is academic and research collaboration of RCCIIT with many reputed Institutes/Universities within the country and abroad. The institute is poised to make its presence felt at the international level by showcasing its research credential and networking through international conferences to be organized every year. It has already organized around ten international conferences (like ICRCICN, ISSIP) with keynote speakers and authors participating from different countries.
