Dr. Shyam Sunder Agrawal is the Director-General of KIIT College Of Engineering, Gurgaon. He is a world-renowned scientist in the area of Acoustic Speech and Communication. He obtained a Ph.D. from Aligarh Muslim University, India. Having research experience of about 45 years first as a Scientist and subsequently as an Emeritus Scientist. He has worked as Guest Researcher at MIT, Cambridge, and UCLA in the U.S.A. He has received a large number of honors and awards, a prominent one being the Sir C.V. Raman Award by the Acoustical Society of India. He is a Distinguished Fellow of IETE, and a fellow of CSI, ASI, ISPhS, and other professional societies.
What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

Education is one of the most important aspects of any student’s life. It makes an individual an employable person and a responsible citizen of society. Hence, I feel proud to be a part of this field.
How do you promote an environment of holistic growth for your students?

We would like an overall development of the student. We don’t like to make the student only confined to studies and textbooks. Hence we focus on good health practices, sports, and other co-curricular activities, cultural activities as well.

Our aim is that a student must learn new skills every day to grab the best opportunities available. In KIIT the curriculum is built in such a way that the students ought to get a lot of practical exposure along with textual knowledge.

How does the curriculum of your institute ensure the best practice of industry?

At KIIT, we have a plethora of guest lectures, industry visits, and a lot of placement opportunities. We have collaborations with several industries, for project works, and internship opportunities. Here the student gains practical knowledge about the industry. We also give opportunities to students who want to begin their startup and also aid them financially.

There are weaker section students, for whom we have opportunities of fellowship given by the central government for KIIT. Apart from this if a student is meritorious, we provide them certain good scholarships with which he/she can pursue the education. We give opportunities for inter-cultural activities to establish a very cordial environment.
What do you think should be the University’s top priority over the next 10 years?
“The top priority should be to impart the latest and quality education, in sync with changing times”
The syllabus should be updated from time to time, according to the needs of the job industry. Imparting skills-based education to students is also mandatory. Additionally, making students tech-savvy is essential for global acceptance.

Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth?
“Focus on hard work, don’t look for shortcuts to success”
Keep your vision and thinking high. The youth is the future and strength of the country, they should have fixed goals in their mind and zeal to achieve them. They should not get away with the glamour and the riches of others, though they should work hard to get one for them.
