Dr. B. B. Musmade is Professor and Head of Instrumentation and Control Engg at D Y Patil College of Engineering Akurdi, Pune. He obtained his B. E. & M. E. degrees in Instrumentation & Control Engineering and received a Ph.D. degree for his contributions on the Design of Sliding Mode Controllers for Process Control Applications. He has 25 years of experience in teaching, research, and administration. He is also a Member of, Board of Studies in Instrumentation Engineering at Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. He took initiative to establish the Centre of Excellences in the Departments in collaboration with Companies like Emerson Automation Pune and Fox Solutions in the field of PLC, SCADA, HMI, DCS. He has published about 30 refereed journal and conference papers. He worked as Vice-Chairman, IET, Nashik Local Network. He is a reviewer of reputed refereed international journals and IEEE conferences.

Instrumentation and Control Engineering is a specialized branch of engineering that covers recent developments in automation and control. A highly interdisciplinary branch covers major aspects of Electrical, Electronics, Computer, Mechanical, Robotics, etc. Biomedical engineering is also an important subject of this discipline. Computerized controls are used at a very large scale in process industries. Control and Computing are essential features of any Modern Instrumentation and Control system. The rise of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (or Industry 4.0) is the ongoing automation trend of traditional manufacturing and industrial practices, using modern control technology as a core component of this discipline. It is a trend towards automation and digital infrastructure being practiced in almost all sectors of industries. In the broader perspective, the students have a wide scope of development as automation and control professionals.

What are areas of work where I&C engineers work?

Nowadays, almost all industries are automated. Therefore, it is important to have expertise in the field of Instrumentation and Control Engineering to achieve their requirements. Automation is the core job of instrumentation engineers. As the trend of automation picks up in India and abroad Instrumentation Engineers are finding more and more job opportunities. Right from R&D units to aerospace companies, thermal power plants, steel plants, fertilizer plants, refineries and cement plants, automobile companies, pharmaceuticals, food industries, biomedical companies, etc these engineers find job opportunities in almost all domains of the world. Control and Optimization is another important area in many Industries wherein Instrumentation and Control engineers having good exposure in these areas will be highly effective in solving various critical needs of the Industries. Moreover, an instrumentation engineer is responsible for designing, developing, installing, managing, and maintaining equipment that is used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery, and processes.

Emerson has donated a complete setup of the latest Distributed Control System worth Rs 21 lakhs. This system is being used in many industries for the complete automation of plants. This facility is created to give hands-on training on DeltaV Distributed Control System. Ms. Samiksha Bokare, B E (Instru and Control) student of Academic Year 2020-21, participated in an All India National Level Open Automation Challenge organized by B & R Automation Pune. Samiksha secured the First rank in this competition. The company appreciated her project work and has offered job opportunities.
