Dr. S. Omprakash has been working as the Head of IQAC & Mechanical Engineering Department at Christ The King Engineering College, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu. He has done BE from Sri Krishna College of Engineering, M. Tech from Anna University, MBA and PhD as part of his academics. He has an amazing 14 years of teaching and has also published 18+ research papers in various specializations. He has 8 patents on his name.

What is your philosophy of leadership? 

"A true leader knows how to train and motivate his team and get things done"

From the start of my teaching career, I have held several positions and have worked as an Assistant Professor, Head of Department and then as a Principal. And throughout these years, I have learned how to work with people of different mindset and skills. So, managing people is very easy for me and I believe that true leadership is all about productive actions, choices and humble behavior. And I use the same approach to interact with people from our college too.

What do you think should be the college's top priority over the next 10 years?

"It should be to improve and upgrade the education quality as per students and industry needs"

We have a diverse range of students in our college and most of them come from a rural background. Also we have 43 institutions spread throughout numerous nations, therefore I believe that we should focus more on enhancing the education quality of our college be it any sector technology or arts. 

How do you bring in a practical and industry oriented approach towards subjects?

"We organize events in collaboration with industry people and also encourage students to take internships"

We have signed MoUs with reputed industries for the purpose of providing the best learning experience to our students in the form of placement and corporate oriented events and training. And we invite industry experts as well to have a fruitful discussion with us. In addition to this, we encourage students to pursue 2 months of internship and then we organize industry seminars for them. Also, we operate our own industry in an adjacent neighborhood and offer certification courses to students during semester breaks. 

How do you strategize and update the curriculum to make it befitting for the students?

"By consulting with industry experts and doing necessary changes after getting approval from University"

Although we follow the curriculum designed and updated by the Anna University to which we are affiliated, we also have a considerable amount of flexibility in updating things as per our own and students' requirements. And our curriculum is a perfect amalgamation of best courses and activities like counseling sessions, regular presentations where students are invited to present their ideas and views on modern technologies and business needs. Also, we provide best internship opportunities to students to advance their professional development.

How does your college prepare students for placements?

"Our Placement Cell organize training and mock interviews to train students for placement"

We do have a dedicated Training and Placement Cell to offer rigorous training programs such as Communication Skills and Personality Development training, Aptitude training and learning sessions to students and encourage them to participate in the same so that they can showcase their unique talents and skills. Apart from this, higher level and experienced candidates are also motivated to participate in mock interviews to get ready for the actual interview process and strengthen their weak areas.

Which extracurricular activities are organized in your college to enhance the skills of students?

"Sports activities, coding events along with fun activities are regularly conducted by us"

Our college firmly believes that co-curricular activities are equally important for students along with academics in order to make them ready for the outside competitive world. Hence we have established 20+ technical and non-technical clubs including C and C++ Clubs, Virtual and Augmented Reality Club, Robotics Club along with Music and Programming Languages Club in our college to organize and manage different kinds of academic and fun events for students. Also, sports and games are arranged by us regularly to keep students physically and mentally strong. 

What challenges are you facing to uplift the education quality of your college?

"There is a communication gap between us and students who comes from rural background"

The main issue we need to address and fix on an earliest basis is the communication gap that is there between us and students which we have in our college with rural living and educational background. Because their basic education experience was not so good, many of them find it difficult to understand what we teach and simply try to imitate their peers. 

How does your college enhance the faculties skills and prepare them as per industry standards?

"They are upskilled through FDPs, NPTEL courses and industry organized sessions"

Technologies are changing and evolving day by day and hence teachers also need to stay updated with whatever is happening in the outside technological world in terms of teaching methodologies and developments so that they can deliver correct and best knowledge to students. Therefore, faculty development programs are regularly conducted by our college in both offline and online modes and NPTEL courses are also offered to upskill themselves. Also, we have collaborated with reputed industries to organize best quality training programs to train our teaching staff.

What valuable advice would you like to give to the students for a prosperous career ahead?

"Define your life goals clearly and keep exploring new technologies"

I would advise my students to clearly understand their goals in life irrespective of the Degree courses they are pursuing. No matter if you are in a technical field or not, having a clear goal for life is very important for each of us. Because, once the route is clear, it will become easier for you to reach your destination. If required, explore things, do rigorous research, in short do whatever it takes to make your dreams come true. Lastly, I would suggest they read more and more books, because Books are equally important for them the way their friends are for their complete career growth.
