Dr. M. D. Vijayakumar has been working as Dean of Student Affairs and Professor and Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Chennai Institute of Technology, Chennai, Tamil Nadu. He has done BE, ME, PhD and to handle all management functions efficiently he also completed MBA in HR as part of his academics. He is also specialized in Computer Aided Designs. He has an experience of working more than 10 years in the Chennai Institute of Technology.

What are your roles and responsibilities for the University and students?

"Teaching and guiding my students and monitoring Department activities is my responsibility"

As a Department Head and Professor, I am responsible for educating students and conducting, managing and supervising the Departmental and college activities. 


Which latest program are you offering in your department to help students stand apart from the crowd?

"We provide Mechanical Engineering with Artificial Intelligence , Machine Learning, and Data Science"

In our Mechanical Engineering Department, there is only one program which we are offering to students currently. And to educate them beyond curriculum and books, we regularly organize workshops and technical conferences and we are also planning to organize international level events for the benefit of our students and faculty members. In addition to this, we are planning to establish an industrial center of excellence in welding, metallurgy, and vibration testing of gears. Currently, we have a material testing lab and a computation lab. Students receive training not only in the core domains but also in Python Programming, Artificial Intelligence , Machine Learning, and Data Science.


 What career options would be available for students after pursuing courses from your college?

"Opportunities are limitless be it public or private sector"

As far as career scope is concerned, there are multiple opportunities available in both public and private sectors in the domain of Automobile Engineering along with Natural Gas Industry for students after finishing courses from our college. Additionally, in order to give students the best chance at finding employment in the current economy, our students are studying interdisciplinary skills like coding for automation. Students will be able to get placed in any kind of IT and Manufacturing Sector.


When you first joined the Chennai Institute, what was your vision for it?

"Upgrading student’s skills as per industry standards and requirements was my main aim"

When I joined this college, my goal was to use my expertise and experience to help students improve their abilities and be guided and inspired to perform their best. Teaching is my passion and educating students and nurturing them with good care gives me tremendous happiness and satisfaction in life.

Being the Head of Department, what is your philosophy of leadership? 

"True leadership is all about empowering students by using your knowledge and experience"

Being the Department Head, my prime responsibility is to teach students, inculcate entrepreneurship skills in them and prepare them for a bright future ahead. Along with this, one of my duties is to mentor and encourage them anytime they run into difficulties with their studies or decisions.

Our college is committed towards transforming our students into future technocrats, leaders and entrepreneurs. And our faculties are working hard towards this motto, educating students in the best possible way and addressing their queries and issues on an individual basis. In addition to this, we have collaborated with reputed industries and organizations to bring best training and internships opportunities for students and we have also established the Center of Excellence to enhance the industrial exposure and experiences. To help students use their abilities as effectively as possible, we provide them real time industry projects. Our college's greatest strength comes from these practices taken as a whole.


What do you think should be the institute’s top priority over the next 10 years?

"Upgrade teaching methodologies of our college should be our top priority"

In my opinion, our topmost priority for the upcoming years should be to enhance our education quality, expand our presence among our potential future students and also to include our college in the top 75 NIRF ranking.

What suggestions would you like to give to the current youth and aspiring students?

"Have faith in your skills and no matter which course you are pursuing, study it with full enthusiasm"

I would advise my students to believe in their skills and capabilities and no matter which Engineering programs you are pursuing, you will always succeed. Also, keep learning and upgrading your skills as each one of you is born to lead the nation in the world.
