Dr. Parul Chowdhury is an Assistant Professor at Dr.B.Lal Institute of Biotechnology. She has 6 years of teaching experience after she obtained her Ph.D. Her areas of research include Plant Biotechnology and the Study of abiotic stress in plants. In 2017, she was selected for the INSA summer research fellowship.
What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?
“Connecting with the young minds and guiding them to the right career path”
Educating young individuals is a challenging yet interesting task. Education means teaching whatever is there in the curriculum, which is predesigned along with imparting knowledge and inculcating interest in the students. Students are full of energy and new ideas and definitely, a chance to nurture and guide students professionally and personally are the main key factors that kept me connected to the education sector. The right guidance of the right teacher can positively influence a student’s life, and only the education sector allows us to connect to maximum young individuals with their full energy ready to be channelized in the right direction.
In your experience, what can an inbound student gain from studying here in your Institute?
“Being solely focused on the particular field of study”
As it’s an exclusive biotechnology college, where students are made aware of various areas of biotechnology. They can think in the direction of biotechnology and some innovation in biotechnology. As far as plant biotechnology is concerned, without plants, this earth can’t survive, so research on plants is already on a global platform. Now it’s time to collaborate so that we can have a better future for plant biotechnology altogether.
What are the types of projects that the students work on while studying at your Institute?
“Exploring the field of biotechnology to its core”
We give exposure to students experimentally in every field of biotechnology possible. As far as plant biotechnology is concerned, which is my core domain, abiotic stress biology is my area of research along with plant tissue culture. We have studied the effect of stress in some of the crop plants of Rajasthan and studied the bio stimulatory effect of weeds of Rajasthan. We have also taken initiative to develop organic gardens at our institute. We have visited various other organizations to develop term filtration, vermiwash and through internal collaborative research, we are trying to optimize treated wastewater for increasing the productivity of crop and vegetable plants too. So our main goal is sustainable development on campus. Along with research and development which is part of their curriculum, students in our college can work on different projects in groups through RnD activities being conducted throughout the year. It develops the skill of thinking out of the box and it motivates them to work in a team.

What are some valuable insights into the programs that you are offering at your institute?
“A well-defined curriculum with a practical application of the same”
The most valuable understanding students gain is true knowledge of biotechnology, in terms of learning through theory in classrooms as well as practicals in well-equipped labs. Moreover, great attention is given to students by giving them individual attention through the Academic Support Program by the institute and assigning them research guides to pursue research. Along with these students have regular visits to various biotech based industry setups for exposing them to the best in biotechnology. We have a well-equipped tissue culture laboratory so that students can have hands-on experience with plant tissue culture and plant biotechnology.
What do you see as your college’s greatest strengths?
“Always giving the students a platform to showcase their potential”
Our college's greatest strength as it is said it’s an exclusive biotechnology college, a unique platform for students interested in biotechnology and definitely research associated with it. Apart from this, the most important thing is we give emphasis on student strength, guide them and screen them through various activities conducted during their stay duration in college so that a student knows about themselves well. Along with counseling students for studies, research, and development, our college emphasizes the evaluation of learning too. We evaluate students not only based on their class test, but through presentations in classes, seminars, quizzes, and allowing them to present research papers. Our students present their research work on various platforms all over India so that their public speaking skills and confidence level can boost up. Looking for overall development, various cultural activities are also their overall development of the students.
What are the benefits and career options after pursuing courses from your Institute?
“The aspirants can develop themselves to become successful entrepreneurs”
Our colleges have various departments like academics, research, and development, Industrial Biotech training, etc. For building a strong base of the students we have a higher education cell and placement cell which work hand in hand. Through activities like personal grooming, mock interview sessions we segregate students according to their wish and strength, and then they are further counseled for higher education or job after they complete studies. It’s all done in a very coordinated way so that students' confusion can be solved and they can get placed for the higher studies according to their plan. In-plant biotechnology, they can join a good research lab to pursue higher studies, they can go abroad too, and if we talk about self-sustainability they can set up their organic farm, they can have tissue culture laboratories to develop plants through micropropagation.
How does the curriculum of your Institute ensure the best practice of the industry?
“Deliver what the industry demands from its professionals”
As we are an affiliated college, and we have to follow the curriculum designed by the University of Rajasthan. With classroom teaching and practicals we conduct various sessions as discussed above to ensure that they meet all the requirements needed by the industry or higher education which are conducted by various departments of the college.

What would you like people to know about your college they may not know?
“Maintaining the standards of academia by promoting the ideal work culture”
Every student is given individual attention through various programs, like Guru Sishya Parampara, Academic Support Program, batch-wise conduction of practicals, and distribution of students for research through their interesting research domain to the experts of the field. Each year in plant biotechnology I have students who have new ideas about plants to discuss, I guide them and help them to think and design their research plan. So that they will have experience not only of doing practical on the bench but also planning and designing experiments in plant biotechnology. I motivate students to participate in various oral and poster presentations, and some of my students have won prizes in various platforms outside our college.
How do you tend to establish a healthy relation and environment in your college?
“Being available to the students whenever they need and maintaining transparency”
A healthy and positive environment can help students in better understanding and learning. In our college, teachers are available for solving queries of the students, not only in classrooms but their extra classes are also arranged through Academic Support Programs. Regular feedback of the students is taken so that they feel connected to the environment. We also appreciate student’s achievement in various platforms, like academics, research and development, and culture so that student feels motivated.
Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth and the aspiring students?
“Put in enough time thinking and choosing the right career path”
Students should be able to know their strengths so that they can plan their careers accordingly. They should discuss their ideas, plans with their mentors so that they can guide them well in proper planning of their career paths. Education is not only getting a degree but also knowing the responsibility of your surroundings and to be a responsible citizen of our country.
