DR B LAL INSTITUTE OF BIOTECHNOLOGY

How would you describe your leadership style?

“My leadership philosophy is closely aligned to that of the institute’s mission”

I ensure that everyone responsible for the institute’s immense growth in size and stature – teachers, non-teaching staff and students – are empowered & supported to make decisions independently. It has been my priority to create a shared sense of responsibility and success amongst everyone at the institute, so that our efforts are not just complimentary, but also synergistic.

What can an inbound student gain from studying in your college?

“Ensure holistic development of a student”

With modern infrastructure, state-of-the-art labs, regular workshops, live projects led by our eminent faculty members and engagements with industry leaders, we provide our students with a network, excellent exposure, and the opportunity to apply their learnings outside their classrooms. We encourage and support our scholars to attend conferences, take up research, internships and entrepreneurial initiatives. Ultimately, we ensure that every student of BIBT is industry and academia-ready when they graduate.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry-oriented?

“We aim to prepare bio-technocrats who would be amongst the finest in the world”

As a part of our BSc Biotechnology curriculum, industrial training is provided to students after their first year. During their third year, they have to compulsorily write dissertations under faculty members. Besides this, based on the research aptitude of the students, they are given a chance to be a part of the research projects of the institute with our research team, which are sanctioned through the government departments and national agencies.

What is your institute’s biggest strength?

“Student’s entrepreneurial spirit and our ability to foster”

Through our incubation center – the Centre for Innovation, Research and Development and Utkarsh, our Entrepreneurship Cell, we fund our students’ ventures and guide them on all aspects of starting a business, from ideation & product testing to marketing and management. We also organize networking events with our alumni who have started successful businesses.

What does the curriculum at your college look like?

“Teach under a Guru Shishya Parampara-inspired system”

Classroom teaching is supplemented by lab work, projects and guided research. We ensure that we equip our students with relevant industry knowledge and interpersonal skills/ soft skills, both of which are necessary in every context.

What are your roles and responsibilities to the college and the students?

“Keep staff and students motivated”

For my students, I need to ensure that the college shapes them into the best version of themselves. I make sure that there are ample opportunities for them to learn – from their teachers, from industrialists, from the community, and from each other. For our college, my focus is on achieving short-term goals and tying them into our larger vision to make and maintain BIBT as a Center of Excellence in the field of biotechnology. It’s important that I keep the staff and students motivated towards this goal as well.
