The Bihar government has decided to permit the increase of approximately 20,000 seats in colleges under four universities at the undergraduate level in Bihar.
According to the HT reports, the Bihar Education Minister, Vijay Kumar Chaudhary said that the state government has approved the proposals received from various universities.

The proposals mentioned the increasing number of seats for the increasing demand, goodwill of students, and the need to expand higher education in the state.
Nitish Kumar, the Chief Minister has been constantly elucidating the requirement to increase the gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education in Bihar and the decision is significant in this regard as it will ensure that the students do not have to wander due to lack of seats in Bihar colleges, the report said.
Currently, the state is struggling with a serious lack of teachers in its higher education institutions as they're running at around 50% of the sanctioned strength owing to the demanding vacancies, the HT report said.
As per the HT reports, KB Sinha, Working President of the Federation of University Teachers' Association of Bihar (FUTAB) said that with the increase in seats, the sanctioned strength of teachers has remained unchanged for the years, which needs to be increased in order to maintain the teacher-student ratio and the government should also consider it.
The appointed process must be accelerated as the new batch of teachers join, a huge number of teachers on the other hand retire.
A total of 10,200 seats has been increased in around 41 colleges under the Lalit Narayan Mithila University (Darbhanga), followed by 3,388 seats in 11 colleges of TM Bhagalpur University and 4,736 seats in 19 colleges of JP University (Chapra).
In contrast, a total of 505 seats have been increased in the four colleges of Patna University, 260 seats in Patna Women’s college and 60 seats in Patna Science College have been added and around 180 seats have been increased in Patna College. An additional 15 seats have been allocated to the College of Art and Craft in Patna, the HT reports said.
