New Delhi: AIIMS throughout India are likely to revise and model their fee structure after IITs and IIMs to increase the premier institute's capacity for revenue generation. The suggestion was made by the institute during AIIMS' 'chintan shivir' held in August 2022.

As per AIIMS, the "chintan shivir" included a discussion on a variety of subjects, such as finding a workable model fit for sustained revenue generation to lessen the need for government money and improving healthcare services at all AIIMS campuses in India.
An official source informed that the Union Health Ministry is currently putting the finishing touches on a committee that will examine the viability of these recommendations and determine the extent of the increase that can be achieved.
The source claimed that in order to increase the premier institute's capacity for revenue generation, it was suggested that the cost structures for programs offered by AIIMS be revised.
As of now, the course fee of MBBS Program at AIIMS campuses is about INR 6,500 in total. The cost of an MBA or postgraduate degree at IIMs is INR 24 to 25 lakh. While on the other hand, the cost of a BTech at IITs is INR 10 to 12 lakh and MTech is up to INR 3 lakh.
The panel also suggested expanding the number of private wards and turning a third of regular ward beds across all AIIMS into special wards. Establishing a committee to review the fees charged by AIIMS to both paying and non-paying patients was also recommended.
The officials stated that another proposal was also introduced to focus on developing a system for identifying AB-PMJAY, state government programs, CGHS, ECHS, railroad, and any other government-linked scheme which may contribute to the revenue pool.
Other recommendations included adding auxiliary services and support services that can be tapped for further revenue generation. In this paradigm, the poor receive services at no cost, while those who choose to pay for them are treated according to their entitlement.
According to a source, there is also talk of AIIMS facilities working with reputable institutions like the top IITs and IIMs in India to do joint research and education projects rather than wasting money and taxing the government coffers.
