New Delhi: The Ministry of Education has declared that it will launch a unique programme through the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) in consultation with the defence authorities to promote the Centre's 'Agnipath' soldier recruitment initiative.

NIOS will offer customised courses to assist 'Agniveers' who have completed matriculation in obtaining Class 12 pass certificates as part of the scheme. It will also provide certificates that will be accepted for higher study and employment.
The Agnipath initiative, which is a pan-India merit-based recruiting process for soldiers, airmen, and sailors, was announced by the Ministry of Defence on Tuesday, June 14, 2022. Under the scheme, young people will be given the chance to serve in the armed forces as "Agniveers" for a duration of four years, including training.
The initiative provides for the retention of 25% of each specific batch for regular duty once the candidates' four-year tenure is over, based on organisational requirements and rules established by the armed services from time to time. The Agniveers must be between 17.5 to 21 years old to apply. Candidates with a class 10 or 12 diploma are also eligible for the position.
This certificate will be accepted throughout the country for job and higher studies. It will also enable the Agniveers to obtain the necessary educational qualifications and abilities to eventually play a constructive role in society.
Enrollment, course development, student assistance, self-learning material, accreditation of study centres, personal contact programme, evaluation, and certification will all be facilitated by the specific programme of NIOS. Under the Agnipath Scheme, the NIOS open schooling system, which is exceptionally user-friendly and available to all from anywhere, at any time, opens its doors to all Agniveers.
The MoE on Wednesday stated that it will also start a three-year skill-based bachelor's degree programme for such defence personnel, which will acknowledge the skill training they earned during their time in the defence.
IGNOU's degree programme will be recognised for job and education in both India and overseas. For the scheme's implementation, the Army, Navy, and Air Force will sign an MoU with IGNOU.
