The Research Master’s program Classics and Ancient Civilizations trains students to do research, write project proposals, acquire research funding, and communicate their research results effectively to an academic audience and the wider public. It can best be characterized as a disciplinary program in an interdisciplinary context. In composing student's individual programs, they may opt for a disciplinary specialization in Classics, Ancient Studies, Archaeology of Ancient Near Eastern Studies. In the core modules, as well as in several elective courses, however, students will be stimulated to broaden their academic horizons by learning to position their discipline within a broader interdisciplinary academic context. students may also choose to give their entire program, including their thesis, an interdisciplinary orientation.
It gives students a world-class education in Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Near East. Students can specialize in a discipline of their choice. As students will be studying in an interdisciplinary context, they will learn at the same time how to cooperate with other scholars in other disciplines. Thus they will become fully equipped and prepared for the modern study of the Ancient World.
This two-year program trains students to do research, write project proposals, acquire research funding, and communicate their research results effectively to an academic audience and the wider public. Students will be well-prepared for conducting Ph.D. research in the Netherlands or abroad and will be able to function successfully as a researcher either in or outside academia.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:

Students can be admitted to the Research Master’s program if they have obtained an academic (WO) Bachelor’s degree in:
- Classics (Griekse en Latijnse Taal en Cultuur)
- Ancient Studies (Oudheidwetenschappen)
- History with Ancient History as specialization;
- Philosophy with Ancient Philosophy as specialization
- Archaeology
- Assyriology
- Religious Studies
- A similar degree program with relevant specialization.
- Your average mark for your Bachelor's program was 7.5 (or equivalent) or higher
Indian Eligibility:
Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet the following eligibility criteria:
- VU Amsterdam requires all applicants to take an English test. Exceptions are made for students who have completed a bachelor's or master's in Canada, the USA, UK, Ireland, New Zealand, or Australia.
- TOEFL and IELTS tests must have been completed no more than two years before 1st September of the year in which your course starts.
International students hailing from non-English speaking countries also need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.
