The master's program in History deepens the knowledge and scientific skills according to the subject-specific profile of the Historical Institute, which particularly includes research into the history of the Baltic Sea region. The master's program lasts four semesters. It encompasses a core area in which the classic sub-areas of historical science - Middle, Modern, and Latest History - as well as historical auxiliary sciences or history theory are studied, as well as the history of the Baltic Sea region. In the supplementary area, competencies can be selected from the faculty's offer, particularly from its regional focus.

Tuition Fees

The University of Greifswald does not demand a typical tuition fee. Students have to pay 82 USD per semester as Semester contribution and 107 USD once as enrolment fee. 


Eligibility & Entry Requirement

  • A first professional qualification (usually a bachelor's degree) and proof of at least 60 credit points in the study of history are required. In addition, proof of 3 foreign languages ??is required, which usually include English and Latin. If one of these two foreign languages ??cannot be proven, then students have to apply to the academic advisor to check the admission requirements.
  • Prior to commencing studies, students will be required to provide proof of German language proficiency. The following certificates are recognized by the University of Greifswald for applications to a full degree course:
  • the ‘Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang ausländischer Studienbewerber’ (DSH) at least level 2*
  • the ‘Deutsche Sprachdiplom der Kultusministerkonferenz’ (level 2)
  • the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 from the Goethe Institute
  • the ‘Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache’ (Test DaF), at least level 4 in all partial examinations*
  • the certificate ‘telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule’
  • a completed degree in German Studies, an assessment test with German as an examination subject.
