The students acquire basic knowledge, methods, and theories of German studies in the sub-disciplines of literary studies, linguistics, medieval studies, and German as a second and foreign language as part of a general academic and professional education. The course comprises the compulsory modules Linguistics I / II / III and Literature I / II as well as Medieval Studies, which are followed by two modules for elective specializations, whereby the students choose between the four elective modules "Linguistics", "Multilingualism", "Literature and Culture" and " Select language and literature in media contexts ".
The course leads to a first professional university degree; graduates also acquire the prerequisite.

Tuition Fees
There are no tuition fees at the University of Duisburg-Essen. All students are, however, subject to a student body and social contribution fee per semester.
The social and student body contribution for the summer and winter semesters 2021 amounts to a total of $774.86.
The amount is made up as follows:
- Mobility contribution (ticket): $506.82, of which $367.88 for the VRR semester ticket and $138.94 for the NRW ticket
- Social contribution for the Studierendenwerk: $229.96
- Student body fee: $38.08.
The social and student body contribution is not to be paid before enrollment! Students will be informed about the payment modalities upon registration.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Eligibility:
- General university
- entrance qualification (Abitur), subject-specific university entrance qualification (no technical college entrance qualification!)
- Or an educational certificate recognized as equivalent.
- Those who have qualified in vocational training also have access. The regulations governing university access for those qualified in vocational training at the University of Duisburg-Essen
Indian Eligibility:
Indians students are eligible to apply if they meet the following requirements:
- Educational residents (people who have obtained their higher education entrance qualification in Germany or at a German school abroad) do not require any special proof of German language skills.
- Citizens of an EU member state (and citizens of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway) or German citizens with a foreign educational qualification as well as
citizens of a country outside the EU with a foreign university entrance qualification must pass the "German language test for university entrance" before starting their studies. (DSH 2 level) or pass the TestDaF (TDN 4).
