M.Phil. Sociology: Eligibility

The main eligibility criterion which is considered by most of the colleges for offering M.Phil. Sociology is that the student should have a masters degree in sociology from a college recognized by UGC. But there are some universities which even give admission to those who have done their masters in social studies or history. The students should have obtained the minimum marks required as mentioned by the university. Some universities keep this criterion at 50%, but the general range is 45%-55%.

Those who are eligible according to the above criteria need to appear in the entrance examination conducted by the university.

M.Phil. Sociology: Admission Process

Admission to the course is entirely on the basis of an entrance exam. Since various colleges conduct different entrance examinations or follow the state or national level common entrance examination, it is important to keep a track of these different Entrance Exams.

Some of the important Entrance Exams for M.Phil in Sociology is as follows:

  • BU aptitude Test: Banasthali University conducts an aptitude test for entrance to M.Phil Sociology. Application forms for this are available in the month of April and the exam is held in June.
  • JNUEE: The “Centre for Study of Social Systems” of JNU conducts an Entrance Exam. Application forms for this are available in the month of April and the exam is conducted in the month of May.

Department of Sociology of Delhi University also conducts examination for entrance to M.Phil Sociology programme. Application forms are available in the month of June whereas the Entrance Exam and personal interview take place in the month of August.  

Entrance Exam

The above-mentioned entrance exams would include 100 subjective questions. The time allowed for the exam is 3 hours and the paper is of 100 marks. The paper consists of no Negative marking.

The Entrance exam is followed by a personal interview where a candidate’s communication ability as well as grip on the subject is tested.

Those who want to continue with their current work and also want to get a degree in sociology can opt M.Phil. Sociology Distance Education mode. There are many universities in India which offer this course in distance education mode. Indira Gandhi National Open University-[IGNOU], New Delhi is one of them. IGNOU offers this course for a maximum duration up to 4 years while in some other universities the duration can go up to even 6 years. IGNOU charges INR 10,500 currently for this course. Moreover, there is no maximum or minimum age limit to pursue this course in distance learning (correspondence) mode.
