Master of Arts [MA] (Interior Design)

Course Structure

The course is aimed to provide academic research in the design of interior space.

Since this course offers both theoretical and practical training, the evaluation of students is based on theoretical subjects as well as practical lab work.

The course delivery methods include seminars, class lectures, lab work and case presentations. 

Final Evaluation is based on semester wise performance of the candidate in the sessionals, assessments, end-semester examination, practical tests, and in some universities like Sikkim Manipal University, submission of a Thesis. 

The syllabus might vary a little between universities. However some of the topics remain the same in content and again vary in the name of topic. The syllabus is as follows:

Exercises for making still images & advanced graphics & animation.

This practical lab work is to learn the use of Computer Designs in Interior Designing.

Graphic Communication and Signage

Graphics application for transformation of space,

Graphics and visual communication systems

Signage systems

Display boards, posters etc.

Graphics and Image making

This course is aimed at the use, importance and meaning of Graphics.

Studio

Institutional spaces/Exhibition displays.

Adaptive Reuse for old buildings.

Urban Interiors : Shopping Malls

Another important lab work which introduces students to Studio scenarios and case studies

Advanced Services

Understanding all services & their components.

Studio work for proposals with emphasis to services for small as well as large Scale projects.

This course imparts knowledge on the functioning and designs of services like Water Supply, Plumbing, etc.

Conservation and Urban Design

Introduction, various terms used as conservation.

Need and Importance of conservation of historical monuments buildings or sites.

Approaches and techniques for conservation, Landscaping maintenance and management of conserved buildings.

Adaptive Reuse/Restoration of old buildings - materials used techniques and equipment.

Deterioration of prevention measures.

Maintenance and management of restored buildings using case studies and illustrations.

This course is on the importance on Conservation of monuments, buildings etc.

Furniture Design

Modular furniture

Break down assembly.

This course is aimed at working of furniture.

Theory of Aesthetics

Western aesthetics and Indian Aesthetics.

Relating the spaces, surfaces and interior designing with Aesthetics.

Relation between the traditions of Architecture and aesthetics.

Understanding the concept of ‘Critical Judgement’.

Here, the importance is on the importance of aesthetics in Designing.
