Some students do find better offers than given in the campus placements and thus they opt out of the process. Otherwise, placements are handled by the institute itself.
Also, do not think of summer internships as final placements. You may not get an internship at a reputed company, but you will get an internship for sure. Final placements are a whole different game than summer placements. There have been instances where students who have done internships at smaller companies have landed top jobs during final placements. So, it actually matters less which company you did an internship for, rather grades, business acumen is more important for final placements. You should focus on studies, participating in business school competitions to hone your skills and you will definitely do well in your placements.
