I will try to answer your query and provide some additional information.
After the top most colleges- AIIMS, PGI, JIPMER, NIMHANS and SGPGI, these are the colleges you should try for- Medical colleges in Delhi are the best choice. Out of these, MAMC is the most desirable. It is followed by VMMC, LHMC and UCMS. Then come the medical colleges in Mumbai. KEM is a top medical college, followed by Sion and Grant. Colleges of Kerala and Madras are at par with one another. But Madras Medical College is the best among these. AFMC and CMC Vellore are great for patients, but not so much for the students.
Thus, MAMC is a great choice. I do not possess much knowledge of KGMU and IMS BHU, so I haven’t talked about them.
JJ Hospital offers excellent clinical exposure. It treats diverse cases from across the globe. The hospital handles many high-profile and medico-legal cases. You will be offered ample opportunities to practice and hone your skills.
GMC offers good extracurricular exposure. You can participate in various activities like sports, dance, music, fashion shows, etc. The college fest ‘Astitva’ goes on for a week each year. The college has its own inter-department cricket team, basketball team, etc. Sports competitions for football, basketball, throw ball, badminton, etc. are held every year. The GMC band has singers, guitarists, drummers, flute players, etc. GMC students win most years in inter-college fashion shows across Mumbai.
Other than that, GMC hosts plenty of symposiums, debates, competitions, and academic seminars. For UG-level academics though, GSMC is much better. The undergraduate-level teaching over there is more organized and methodical.
GMC Mumbai isn’t overrated at all. It will help you become an excellent medical professional, given that you work hard and learn diligently.
Students coming from other different states of India might face some issues while adjusting to GMC Mumbai or Seth GS College Mumbai. However, I believe your home state or language should not be an obstacle in your education path because both these colleges are very prestigious and are dream colleges of many. Moreover, their location adds to the never-ending pros of these colleges.
Non-Maharashtrian students might face issues while adjusting to government hostels that have scanty rooms, average mess food, and sometimes terrible roommate tantrums.
Language barrier is another major issue faced by non-Maharashtrians. It’s better to know Hindi or English, at least but try to learn the basic native language for easy communication with patients, localities, office staff, and peers. If you don’t know Marathi, you will face serious issues while interacting with your patients and this may affect your performance.
So try to adjust and stay motivated!
An MD biochemistry in at GMC, Mumbai is highly regarded among medical aspirants. The value of the degree depends on the person taking the course, his interest in the field, and his goals.
One of my friends recently completed his MD in Biochemistry at GMC Mumbai and today works in a corporate hospital. Another friend, having completed the same course, works at private labs. Several others work as assistant professors. Some fortunate ones have even opened their own labs.
The scope of this course therefore depends mainly on you. To open more doors of opportunities, you can take seminars, and journal clubs, teach UG students, do internal assessments, and also do some research work. GMC receives huge grants from the Government for the research work.
So make a wise decision after considering all factors.
I will try to answer this query as per my limited knowledge.
As for GMC, its teaching standards have declined. The classes aren’t as rich as in previous times. Even the study culture isn’t as good now. Only the brand name remains. Because of this, GSMC is currently much better ranked than GMC. So if you are from Lucknow, choose KGMU over GMC Mumbai. MBBS is quite stressful, and homely support does a lot for mental health.
Both GSMC and KGMU are good medical colleges. Choosing between these is a bit difficult. Research on the condition of PG reservation at Maharashtra colleges, and Provincial Health Services (PHS) rule in UP. This will help you make a better decision.
Both GSMC Mumbai and KGMU are excellent choices.Choose between the two based on various factors that I have listed above.
