I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted to do in my life. Originally I wanted to be a dermatologist which would give me the freedom of any undergrad. I was originally accepted to all the universities I applied to for bio or biochem (as I loved bio). I got to thinking and knew bio was not a great degree to have if I didn't get into med school. A friend's relative is an actuary and the more she told me about it as well as when I took grade 12 calculus and fell in love with math I knew it was for me. Western was the only of the 4 schools I applied to where my major wasn't set in stone as well they offered me a 10,000 scholarship.
Exams
My average in grade 12 was 96.5. The minimum requirement average-wise was low maybe 85. I overshot this but most schools and programs I applied to I as well overshot since I mostly applied to broad degrees. I am Canadian so no tests were required to be taken for me to enter the school and fittingly I did not take any.
Placement
They have tons of companies come and visit western. As I said Willis Towers Watson as well I am going to a London Life presentation on Thursday. I am only second year so my specific information on the internships is very limited as I'd have to apply on my own at this point in time.
Internship
There are plenty of internships for actuarial science. Either summer opportunities, many informational sessions, and the opportunity to do a full year after 3rd year. I recently attended a workshop for networking with Willis Towers Watson and plan to attend many more.
Events
There are so many it would be impossible to list them all. We have homecoming, blackout games, purple fest, clubs week, student council day, yesterday was sci in the sun, and a million more.
Fees
I am not international so I have no idea I took out OSAP loans which are not the best since they do not even come close to covering what I'd need them to. Many students this year had to drop out because of Doug Ford's restructuring of the loans. The 10 tuition cut was just moved to the other fees category of tuition therefore no actual tuition cut.
Examination Structure
All exams fall within 2 weeks at the end of the semester
Faculty
I am in the faculty of science specifically in the statistics and Actuarial department. I think they do a good job providing resources for students who are not sure this is what they want to do.
Hostel
I currently live off campus because it is considerably cheaper. The meal plan at Webster is close to six thousand dollars and mandatory for students who live in residence.
