Abhishek Patel Review at McMaster University, Hamilton | Collegedunia

A Graduate in Engineering

AP
7.2 /10

Life at McMaster so far has been great, what I love about it is that there’s a balance between activities in and out of the classroom. As a current student, I will always recommend McMaster, and I am so glad that I have chosen McMaster University to pursue my studies.

Course Curriculum :

In my 1st term, the subjects that I had chosen were mostly based on industrial application. Also, the project that I did was from the industry, so I can say that I have got industrial exposure related to that subject. I have got a chance to learn different tools that have been used in the manufacturing industry.

Exams :

For my program, GRE is not mandatory so I did not appear for it. Minimum score: IELTS 6.5 overall with no band less than 6. I had to give a behavioral interview called the Kira Talent interview. It was about how you think in different scenarios. It is used to get a holistic view of candidates, determine their fit with the school, and assess their communication skills.

Placement :

Fresh graduate students can expect a package starting at $60,000 per annum and going higher as per their skill set and experience. McMaster has a job portal called OscarPlus, from where students can apply for full job opportunities.

Internship :

Currently, I am doing my Co-op as an Automation Intern at one of the reputed companies called Mold Masters when it comes to the market of Injection molding and Hot runners around the globe. It is a 12-month of full-time Co-op with an hourly wage of $25.

Fees :

Each course has a unit of 3 credits, for 1 credit fee is $1270. so one course would cost $3810. Therefore 10 courses, would be 38100. However, the university also charges a $1000 supplementary fee and around $900 for other expenses.

Scholarship :

No, I haven't applied for any scholarship.

Faculty :

The faculty-to-student ratio depends upon the courses that you take. Some courses are so popular that enrollment gets closed pretty soon, so the maximum will be 60 students to 1 faculty, but generally, it varies from 30 to 40 students per faculty. All the faculty are well-regarded for their disciplines and have exceptional knowledge of their fields.

Campus Life :

McMaster Athletics and Recreation offers a wide variety of opportunities to maintain a regular exercise routine, including varsity athletics, team intramurals, drop-in activities, and outdoor recreation. The facilities include the Ivor Wynne Centre, the David Braley Athletic Centre and the Ron Joyce Stadium, which combine to house seven gymnasiums, three studios, three natural grass fields, two artificial soft-surface fields, a 50m pool, a 200m indoor track, squash courts, an indoor climbing wall, a high ropes course and one of the largest university fitness centres in Canada. McMaster is home to three excellent campus libraries featuring all of the academic resources you need for your studies, which are Mills Memorial Library, Innis Library, and the H.G. Thode Library of Science & Engineering. McMaster provides healthy food options on the campus itself, with options to accommodate vegan, vegetarian, halal and gluten-free dietary restrictions. We have different cafes and restaurants such as Starbucks, Tim Hortons, CAFE ONE, Pizza pizza, Booster juice, Cento, La Piazza, Phoenix Bar & Grill and so many others. The campus is fully facilitated with free high-speed internet Wi-Fi.

Hostel :

I pay $425 for a personal room in the basement except for utilities, usually, it goes up to $50 to $60, so the total would be $475. My place is located 2min walk from the university. It has all the facilities like a washing area, kitchen, washroom, etc. The average rent near the university is between $500 to $600.
