FAQs

Are all international applicants required to provide English proficiency scores?

Unless the applicant has attended a university in an English-speaking country or has an undergraduate degree from a US school, all international applicants must submit TOEFL results. Only candidates from English language school systems are exempted.

Is the admission application fee refundable?

The application fee is non-refundable for freshmen applicants. Graduate applicants also do not receive a refund with an exception in a few graduate & professional programs. Applicants are advised to see the graduate program website to see if the waiver option is available or not.

Is UMBC selective in admissions?

Yes. UMBC is quite selective in admission with a moderate acceptance rate. Admissions are also quite competitive as applicants with exceptional academic and professional records are given admission only. No leniency is given in case there are incomplete documents. Meeting minimum requirements doesn’t guarantee admission as UMBC receives a large number of applications every year.

Can I submit my transcripts with English translation but without credential evaluation?

Credential evaluation of freshmen international transcripts is mandatory for every applicant. Without evaluation from UMBS approved credential evaluators, the transcripts are not accepted. However, the graduate school accepts transcripts without a credential evaluation; they are only recommended to do so.

What credential evaluation agencies are approved and recommended by the university?

Freshmen applicants are required to get their transcripts credential evaluated either from Education Credential Evaluators, educational perspectives, foreign credential services of America, or WES (World Education Services). The graduate office recommends WES.

What are SAT/ACT and TOEFL codes of UMBC?

ACT code is 1751. SAT scores are forwarded to the university by the college board whose code is 5835. The TOEFL college code is also 5835.

Can I get admission to graduate programs with a lower GPA than 3.0?

Applicants can still get admitted without a 3.0+ GPA by providing high scores on aptitude exams or providing relevant recommendation letters from competent professional evaluators.

Does the University of Maryland Baltimore County accept unofficial transcripts during the application review stage?

During this time, unofficial copies of transcripts and screenshots of test scores from ETS websites are accepted for initial review. However, after acceptance, the university demands the applicant’s official documents.
