In accordance with the University's mission to "contribute to the technological, economic and cultural development of the city and region," the curriculum emphasizes communication practices in a multicultural and multiethnic metropolitan setting. A specific goal of the program is to train minority students for professional opportunities in communication. The objective is a degree program of high quality which serves the professional aspirations of UTSA students as well as the economic needs of San Antonio and South Texas.
A concentration in Health Communication offers students the opportunity to gain specialized knowledge about the ways that individuals, organizations, and societies communicate about health. Topics in this concentration touch on a multitude of areas from provider-patient interaction to the role of the media in health communication to global public health. Specifically, the course curriculum includes a survey of the field of health communication, and courses about global health communication, health communication campaigns, interpersonal health communication, and the practice of health communication. This concentration's approach to heath communication is both theoretical and applied and is useful for students who seek to maximize their navigation of and experiences in the healthcare system, who want to prepare for further academic pursuits in health communication, or who plan to enter into healthcare-related employment in the private, federal, or global sector.
Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other education completed
- Applicants must submit high school diploma
- Applicants must have minimum GPA 2.5 or equivalent
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum 79 in ibt; 550 in PBT
- IELTS: minimum 6.5
- PTE: minimum 58
