- Healthcare is among the most complex systems in our society. This innovative program — the only one of its kind in Southern California — is designed to educate current and future healthcare professionals on the important principles of systems engineering to help optimally manage the complexities and challenges facing healthcare today. The program was developed in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente and can be tailored to the needs of the working student. Its unique strengths are internationally recognized research and teaching in Lean methods as applied to the healthcare delivery and engineering community, as well as renowned faculty.
- The LMU Healthcare Systems Engineering M.S. degree program offers the highest quality unique education addressing this urgent national need.
- Systems Engineering is a body of knowledge that originated in the aerospace industry to assure perfect performance of complex multi-disciplinary systems. Healthcare Systems Engineering (HSE) is mostly a non-mathematical body of knowledge, although some areas use statistics, modeling and simulations, and informatics. HSE helps to solve healthcare problems in a broad range of areas, including:
- Patient Safety Systems
- Powerful Lean Streamlining and modeling of operations in emergency departments, operating rooms, clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, supply chain, and administration - reducing waste, cutting cost, giving providers more time for the patient, and improving quality and work environment
- Integrating fragmented healthcare elements in to save and redundant patient-focused systems with well-manufactured interfaces.
- Managing population health, telemedicine, home care.
- Reducing errors and accidents in increasingly complex clinical environments.
- Improving the use and interconnectivity of medical devices ("everything is now cross-connected")
- Electronic records and healthcare enterprise informatics
- Simulations and modeling of operations and economic analysis
- Medical research from big data
- And numerous others.
