Students in the program develop critical thinking skills, refine their intellectual and creative processes, and learn both traditional and contemporary aspects of the painter’s craft. The program provides a solid foundation for students pursuing graduate studies or a studio art career and for students wanting to build on their creative training through further professional and/or academic experiences.

You will learn how to translate three-dimensional space and form into a pictoral plane and use color to create effects of light and luminosity. You will explore the correlation between painting and other media, such as digital forms, installation, and performance, and you will learn how to use woodshop tools and equipment to create and prepare surfaces for painting.

Ultimately, you will define the medium, aesthetic character, form, and subject or topic of your own paintings, creating a strong and coherent body of work that is uniquely yours.

The Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting supports students’ development of their own creative vision, rooted in the language of painting and its contemporary relevance. Juniors have a large studio devoted to them and seniors have individual studio spaces where they learn skill sets in preparation for the life of a professional artist post-graduation.

Through a diverse faculty who represent a wide range of viewpoints and a wealth of experience, students learn how to not only develop a unique body of work but also how to document and exhibit it professionally in the community and online.
