It is usually divided into four sub-disciplines:
- Physical Oceanography – the study of waves, currents, tides, and ocean energy.
- Geological Oceanography – the study of the sediments, rocks, and structure of the seafloor and coastal margins.
- Chemical Oceanography – the study of the composition and properties of seawater and how it is affected by physical mixing processes and interactions with the seafloor, the atmosphere, and ocean life.
- Biological Oceanography – the study of marine organisms and their interactions with the ocean environment.
All of these sub-disciplines are highly interrelated, as well as being closely aligned to other fields such as meteorology/atmospheric science, geophysics, and ocean engineering.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement
Academic Requirements:
- Submit official transcripts of high school and other educational institution attended
- Official transcripts must be in both English and native language with all the courses taken and grades for each subject
- Applicants must have completed the following coursework: 4 years of English; 3 years of History/social science; 3 years of Natural Science; 3 years of Maths; 2 years of foreign language
- Submit a personal statement/resume
- Submitting SAT/ACT score is optional
- Submit English Language Proficiency test scores
English Language Requirements:
- TOEFL: minimum score of 70 in iBT; 500 in PBT
- IELTS: minimum score of 6.0
- PTE: minimum score of 48
- Duolingo: minimum score of 105
