- The field of microbiology encompasses the study of a wide diversity of micro-organisms, including viruses, bacteria, archaea bacteria, algae, fungi and protozoa. Microbiologists seek to understand the interactions between these organisms and components of our biosphere.
- The program in microbiology is designed to prepare students for laboratory positions in industry, government, and university research. The program also provides a foundation for graduate work in microbiology, virology, molecular biology, medicine and other areas. Certification is possible by special examination upon graduation.
