- Historians ask broad questions about how cultures, societies, nations and individuals change. And historians develop crucial lifelong skills of critical reading, thinking and speaking.
- Students' coursework in history will begin with a survey of the history, including at least two world regions (Western civilization, Asia, the U.S. and Latin America or Africa). Students will then decide whether to complete Plan I (providing a broad education in histories of several geographic areas) or Plan II (encouraging independent work, seminars, the study of historical thought, and active engagement in research and writing).

In either plan, students will choose one major and one minor field of concentration from the following possibilities: pre-industrial Europe, modern Europe, United States history, Asian history, African history and Latin American history.

Academic Eligibility:
- A high school diploma (or equivalent)
- Students who are not residents of California must earn a GPA of 3.40 or higher.
- SAT/ACT scores
- The University of California Board of Regents unanimously approved the suspension of the standardized test requirement (ACT/SAT) for all California freshman applicants until fall 2024.
- If students’ native language and school language of instruction prior to their study in the United States were not English, then they must demonstrate English proficiency. They can do so by submitting TOELF/IELTS score reports.
Indian Eligibility:
- Students must complete their standard XII years of education and sit for 10th and 12th-year board/state examinations.
