The interdisciplinary program spans 3 campuses of Texas A&M University System and 6 Departments. The host department of the program is the Department of Marine Biology on the Texas A&M University at Galveston (TAMUG) campus. The Department of Marine Sciences is also located on the TAMUG campus. The Departments of Oceanography, Wildlife & Fisheries Science, and Biology participate in the program on the College Station campus (TAMU). The Department of Life Sciences is located on the Texas A&M - Corpus Christi campus.
The Marine Biology Program is designed for students who wish to pursue careers in higher education, government, or private industry. This joint degree is unique in providing students an opportunity to choose courses from any campus and form committees with any of the participating faculty. The principal strengths of this marine biology program lie in the international recognition, scholarly productivity, and extramural funding of its diverse faculty, as well as the strategic location of two campuses on the Gulf of Mexico.
