Fordham University, Gabelli School of Business

I wanted to be in the city and Fordham was in a fantastic spot with access to the theater which is what I ultimately want to work in. I knew I was above Fordham's average so I could get in. I had the application fee waived. I applied to 14 colleges and I got into 9 of them. I've maintained a high honors status throughout all my schooling. I loved the independence the Lincoln Center campus has while still maintaining a sense of community.

Course Curriculum

8

There are a ton of core requirements but they ultimately help you become a well-rounded student and assist you in determining your concentration. You learn about marketing, business communications, information systems, accounting, business law, ethics, management, etc. Something special about Gabelli is the Consulting Cup Challenge which is a semester-long project that takes on real-world businesses and teams propose ideas and solutions for their development.

Exams

Gabelli has a great reputation as far as business schools go and I knew it would challenge me more so than the regular liberal arts school. We had a Gabelli freshmen class of 155 students. I believe the average SAT score was about 1400 and I scored 1470. There is a large business core requirement and you take a minimum of 120 credits. Much of your business core curriculum occurs in your sophomore year and then you can focus on your individual Global Business concentration.

Placement

I believe about 90% of students complete an internship before graduation, in my program it is required. Many students complete a range of 2-6 internships during their time at Fordham. College alumni are beyond willing and eager to hire Fordham students and they seem to be everywhere at any company. The connections we have in the city are invaluable and help students get high-paying jobs at reputable companies.

Internship

Yes, I haven't experienced one yet as a sophomore but the career services office is great with helping students find internships and jobs. We have an entire program called Handshake that is specific to Fordham internships and companies who want Fordham students as employees. We also have a lot of professional development and networking events that give students a chance to interact with potential employers.

Fees

We have an initial $200 housing deposit fee and then fees for books, laundry, newspaper, facilities, meals, etc. my tuition is around $55,000 minus my $12,000 renewable merit Loyola Scholarship. I did not apply for a loan, I used outside aid and scholarships. There are scholarships for international students available and there are more scholarships available as you continue your schooling.

Scholarship

Yes, I received a merit scholarship with my acceptance letter and a small amount of financial aid. I paired this with multiple outside scholarships I won on my own.

Examination Structure

We have midterms and finals for both semesters. The schedule is mapped out and we get a few free reading days prior to exams to allow us ample study time.

Faculty

7

The classes are small so we have a good amount of faculty. I've had a mix of full-time professors and adjunct professors. It really depends. The majority of my teachers are good, while some are fantastic and some are disappointing. They are usually willing to help through office hours and email.

Hostel

I live on-campus since it's so easy. All the buildings are connected via underground tunnels which makes it easier to reach the dining hall, library, classes, etc in a timely, recurrent manner. I live in McMahon hall which is an apartment-style room with three single bedrooms, a kitchen, a bathroom, and a living area. The heating and AC are reliable and if anything doesn't work, facility management is fantastic at fixing things quickly. It is expensive with room rates listed online by the year, but living in NYC is expensive either way.
