The major in brings together some of our most fascinating courses and inspiring faculty from the humanities at Mills, including philosophy, the history of art and music, the study of literatures in various languages, ethnic studies, gender and sexuality studies, and religious studies.

These faculty will introduce you to theoretical perspectives on issues in the modern world, including race, gender, and metaphysics. You’ll also explore perspectives on aesthetic practices like art, literature, and cinema. Your professors will draw from different cultures, historical periods, and intellectual traditions across the globe—from Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe. In small, collaborative classes, you’ll explore the way theories have shaped, or been shaped by, cultural practices. You’ll compare philosophical ideas from different traditions and reflect on how these ideas shape your own world view. You’ll also take courses in a foreign language in which influential texts have been written and practice your translation skills.

Your professors will help you chart an individualized academic path built around your own interests. For your senior thesis, you’ll select a subject area you’re passionate about and pursue independent research. The major will prepare you for just about any career where critical thinking and analytical skills are valued.
