Course Curriculum Overview:

I chose this course of mechanical engineering as firstly I didn't see myself doing anything else, secondly, this was the only branch I could get in NITC as it is one of the prestigious NICs. Faculty faculty-student ratio was good in the first year when all branches shared all subjects in common but now in the second year, we have core subjects so teachers are kind of fewer per subject like we have a hectic or weird timetable because of less faculty. ALL teachers around 95% are Ph. D.s from IITs or foreign universities, no problem with that. Exams are timely around a 1.5 to 2 months gap per exam series. like midsem after 2 months of starting semester then end sem after 1.5 months it varies. They are not very difficult they can be made difficult as per the syllabus they provide many students need to pass too so they ask some questions just to give marks.

Sabeer Chalana
Anil KumarB.Tech Electronics and Communication Engineering, National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur (2018)

ECE has more job opportunities than Mechanical Engineering. After completing Mechanical Engineering, you will get jobs in PSUs, in government organizations.

  • If you are looking for a job after B.Tech or M.Tech then ECE will be a good option for you.
  • But if you want to pursue higher studies and looking to go into a research field then choose according to your interest.

In the following table, you will get basic information about Mechanical at NIT Calicut and ECE at NIT Jamshedpur.

Category NIT Jamshedpur ECE NIT Calicut Mechanical

Is mechanical or ECE better in NIT Calicut?

Karan SolankiStudied at NIT Calicut (2019)

According to some of my friends studying at NIT Calicut, the ECE branch is better in placements than the Mechanical Engineering branch.

  • The placement greatly depends on the Aptitude and Academic record of the candidate.
  • The Teaching quality of both of these departments is not so good.
  • The candidate needs to work by themselves. The faculty might not be cooperative.
  • Other than just depending on library books, candidates can prepare by learning from the internet as per the syllabus.
  • It is important to know that the departments are very strict about their attendance policy. 80% attendance is mandatory for all students.
Categories ECE at NIT Calicut
Course Fee 5.42 lakhs
Placement Percentage 89%
Highest CTC 29 LPA
Average CTC 11 LPA
Recruiting Companies Infosys, TCS, Accenture, IBM, etc.

Only of the bright thing at NIT Calicut is that the exams are conducted only from the taught portions of the professors and not the whole syllabus. The course curriculum is a bit old and not current industry-oriented. The campus life, facilities and hostels are good. Students here have a decent college life with less extravaganza.

Should I go for PEC Chandigarh Mechanical or NIT Calicut Production?

Sahil Sachdeva
Disha SenguptaStudied at Punjab Engineering College, Chandigarh

You should go for PEC Chandigarh Mechanical. The institute offers decent placements and career opportunities. The placement rate for Mechanical is around 90%. Companies visiting PEC Chandigarh placements recruit students in both core and non-core profiles. The salary packages offered are in the range of INR 3.6 LPA - 22 LPA.

Also, Production is a niche branch. The career opportunities available in the production field are limited compared to the Mechanical field.

I got CSE in VIT Vellore and will get mechanical engineering in NIT Calicut. Which one should I choose?

Suchit RaghuwanshiB.Tech from Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad (2024)

NIT Calicut stands among the top NITs where you will get a lot of exposure to extracurricular activities. As it’s a government college, the fees will be relatively low as compared to private universities like VIT Vellore.

On the other hand, VIT Vellore isn’t that great institute plus being a private institute the fees is quite high for most middle-class students. If you choose Mechanical here then you can go for two different paths.

  • The first path is to go for mechanical core, in which you will get ample research opportunities every now and then. However, the placement scenario will not be that great and you might get some PSUs as campus recruiters for mechanical jobs.
  • The second path is to go for IT Jobs regardless of your mechanical branch.
  • For this, you need to start doing regular coding and relevant skills to compete during the placement rounds.
  • Most of the students are placed by mass recruiters, Although many reputed companies hire but very few students get placed by them.
Categories Mechanical at NIT Calicut CSE at VIT Vellore
Course Fee 5.48 lakhs 7.83 lakhs
Highest CTC 20 LPA 20 LPA
Average CTC 9 LPA 6-8 LPA
Recruiting Companies L&T, Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Tata Motors, etc. Flipkart, Oracle, HP, Dell, etc.

At last, it all depends on your interest and caliber to do well on various career paths. However, if you are inclined towards CSE only then VIT is quite a good option because placements are pretty good there for CSE. Some of the major recruiters include PayPal, Microsoft, Amazon, Morgan Stanley, etc.
