Bachelor of Arts [B.A] (Guidance and Counselling)
Field of Study:
£16,500/Yr
Guidance and Counselling is a subject that is only offered by a select group of universities at undergraduate level. Our BA (Hons) Guidance and Counselling is unique in being accredited by the Career Development Institute, which is the UK-wide professional body for career guidance.
Practical experience is an important element of the course. The Peer Mentoring Project will involve you in mentoring relationships throughout your time at Northumbria. Work placements are available for a full year between your second and final years, with the additional option of a placement module during your second year. Study abroad is also possible, with opportunities to study counselling in Portugal and social policies in Sweden.
Teaching And Assessment
They will use a variety of teaching methods including lectures, seminars, group work, case discussions, problem-based exercises and experiential learning. To facilitate the independent learning that needs to take place outside of formal contact sessions, there will be directed learning tasks during every module.
Teaching is backed up by a well-designed support system that will underpin your learning journey. You will have a personal tutor with whom you can discuss academic or personal issues, and who will model good guidance practice.
A unique feature of the course is the involvement of students in the Peer Mentoring Project. In your first year youÕll be mentored by students from other years then, in turn, youÕll become a mentor in your second and final years.
The assessment strategy is designed to support student-centred learning and you will take increasing responsibility for evaluating and improving your performance. The assessment process will encourage interaction and dialogue around learning and assessment (peer-student and teacher-student).
