Students will have access to world-class postgraduate teaching and research at Birkbeck, and spend one term abroad at a leading university in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy,the Netherlands, Spain, or Canada. This is the only Master's degree in film and screen media in the UK that includes an international exchange with prestigious European and North American universities.

The Master's degree in Film and Screen Media (with Study Abroad) at Birkbeck, University of London encourages students to explore a wide variety of screen media in historical, sociological, aesthetic and anthropological terms and, also, in a variety of cultural and national contexts.

Students can personalise their MA studies and specialise in areas of film and screen media that match  intellectual interests and career goals, and for the study abroad element, students can choose the university with the specific strengths and specialisms that will help their develop and deepen  particular film and screen media interests. Students will need to have good or very good knowledge of at least one European language in order to take full advantage of this course (for Montreal this language is French). Some universities offer language instruction for Birkbeck students, to help them improve their language skills.

This course has three other pathways: MA Film and Screen Media, MA Film and Screen Media (with Television) and MA Film and Screen Media with Film Programming and Curating.

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

  • Students must a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to get admission to this program.
  • Students require a minimum GPA of 3 on a 4.0 scale for the program.
  •  Students should have a second-class honours degree (2:2) or above in a subject.
  • Student should knowledge of at least one other European language at a level to allow students to follow a postgraduate-level course at one of college partner institutions.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Students must complete a 4-year undergraduate degree with first class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.
  • Students need to submit minimum GRE exam scores for a better chance of admission.
  • Students are reviewed on their individual merits and your professional qualifications and/or relevant work experience will be taken into consideration positively. 
  • Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test to get admission to this program.

Required Document List

The following required documents are:

  • Scores: Students have to submit their English language proficiency scores like IELTS, TOEFL, or other test scores and Successful applicants typically provide a score in the 50th percentile.
  • Transcripts: Official transcripts from all educational institutions students have attended.

If students are not from the UK and they do not already have residency here, students may need to apply for a visa.

The visa students apply for varies according to the length of students course:

  • Courses of more than six months' duration: Student visa
  • Courses of less than six months' duration: Standard Visitor visa

International students who require a Student visa should apply for their full-time courses as these qualify for Student visa sponsorship. If students are living in the UK on a Student visa, they will not be eligible to enrol as a student on Birkbeck's part-time courses (with the exception of some modules).
