Doctor of Philosophy [Ph.D] (Medicine: Neuroinflammation and hippocampal neurogenesis)
3 years
Full Time
Field of Study:
- The complex regulation of adult hippocampal neurogenesis underlying behaviour and memory, is principally under the control of neural activity and resident microglia. However, under pathological conditions, ÒactivatedÓ microglia and tissue macrophages recruited from the circulation, are strongly antineurogenic, with associated cognitive and behavioural dysfunction.Ê
- Altered microglial function and neuroinflammation have been implicated in a wide variety of neurological and neuro psychiatric disorders from epilepsy to schizophrenia, while altered neurogenesis has roles in learning and memory dysfunction, and the behavioural responses to stress.
- This PhD will examine the phenotype and roles of altered microglia as a potential therapeutic target for a spectrum of neurological and psychiatric diseases.
