A recent £2.5m University commitment to these Chinese collaborations has led to the appointment of four research fellows whose efforts are focused on developing research which has global impact.
In support of these activities, we now seek to employ a smart and motivated PhD student to work on this translational project by developing human glial models of neuropsychiatric disorders.
Neuropsychiatric disorders (NPDs) such as schizophrenia and mood disorders begin early in life, affect 1 in 17 people worldwide and have no effective treatments. Glial dysfunction plays a leading role in the pathogenesis of NPDs.
Modelling NPDs using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) by subsequent differentiation into glial cells will provide a novel insight into altered glial dysfunction and help to develop novel therapeutic approaches.
