Remarks

I applied to almost all the old IITs and got a seat in IIT Dhanbad, IIT BHU, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Kanpur, IIT Guwahati. I chose IIT Guwahati over others because I got Engineering Physics there. I was always interested in Research and want to work in academia. IITG was established more as a research institute than an engineering institute so it was a pretty good choice for me. I didn't get a good branch in IITB, IITM and IITD so I chose IITG. The reason is obviously the jee rank. I didn't focused more on chemistry during JEE which lowered my rank a bit. For admission to IITG in Btech Engineering Physics the only way is IIT - JEE. For masters you can apply using your GATE or JAM score. During my admission it was covid lockdown so the whole process was completely online. After seat allotment, I accepted the seat and paid the counselling fee. Few days later I got a email from IITG regarding verification and uploaded the necessary documents. After verification I paid the admission fee and my admission got confirmed.

Course Curriculum Overview

2

The clasroom capacity varies from 60-250 students. My specialization has 60 students and Btech batch of my year has 950 students. The girls: boys ratio for my course is 1:4 and for the overall college i would say 1:6. My classmates were from different states of India majorly from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. Peer group is good and talented. Everyone is good at something. Peer learning do take place and in most cases it is necessary. Majority of professors do no give marks for class participation. Only the interested ones genuinely attend the classes for learning. Rest are there just to fulfill the attendance criterion.

Internships Opportunities

1.5

There is no 100% internship. Almost 70-75% students who apply receive internships. 25% students didn't get an On campus internship. All students who receive internships On Campus get paid internships. In my year the highest was ₹7.5L per month, lowest was around ₹20k and the average was somewhere close to ₹1.2L. For my course there are not many companies in the industrial sector. In Physics most of the students apply for Research internships like Mitacs and many work under professors as a Research intern. Amazon, Microsoft, Qualcomm are some of the companies who hire in bulk for interships. Their stipend was around ₹80k, ₹1L and ₹1.2L respectively. Around 180-220 students received PPO in last year. If you have accepted PPO then you can't sit for Final placements. In CSE, ECE, EE the intership scenario is definitely better.

Placement Experience

2

Placement Interviews officially start from 1st December every year. After 7 days the first phase is officially over. Everyone doesn't get placed. Around 12-15% students remain unplaced at the end of the placement season. To get them placed College organises later phase of the placement season but the companies in that are not generally well established. College also contacts it's alums for the placement. Highest CTC is around 2.4Cr(international), Average- 22L and lowest below ₹10L. For my course most of the students do not apply for placements, they apply for Masters in foreign universities. Microsoft, Google hire in bulk with each hiring 20-25 students and they pay around ₹40L -45L. Placement committee contacts and invites the companies for placement season. The process is definitely not 100% transparent as there are some instances of favoritism.

Loan/ Scholarship Provisions

The tuition fee is ₹1Lakh for general category and slightly or significantly less for students from SC,ST or low income groups. I will attach a detailed fee structure as it would be really hectic to write all the different kinds of fees. Mess and hostel fee is common for all which is ₹18000 and ₹7100 respectively including all amenities. I will be paying around ~₹2.2 Lakh for my Btech course of 4 years as I belonge to low income family. I got a full waiver on my tuition fee.The fees for most of the IITs is almost similar. Apart from fees you would hardly need ₹3000-₹4000 for your monthly expenses as IITG is a residential college so you don't need to spend any extra amount for groceries and transport. The fee is different for different categories of students. You get waiver on your tuition fee depending on your parents income and category. Almost everyone with a valid income certificate and affidavit gets a waiver on their tuition fees. Some even get a montly stipend.

Campus Life

2.5

IITG offers a wide range of sports activities to chose from. For outdoor activities various grounds are available which includes Athletics, Hockey, Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket, Tennis. Indoor sports include Table Tennis, Badminton(international level court), Squash and various board games. For indoor sports you are required to have your own shoes, rackets etc and for outdoor sports most of the things are provided by the Institute. IITG has a central gym equipped with almost all types of modern equipments and most of the hostels have a small gym. The campus also has an Olympic size swimming pool. Separate pools are not present for boys and girls. Swimming pool is usually operated from 8AM-8PM during normal days. IITG Auditorium has a capacity of around 1600 people. IITG Central Library is one of the largest libraries in North East India containing thousands of books related to various topics. On normal days students can access library till 2AM and on exam days it is accessible 24hrs. We can access various databases and research papers using our college id for research and projects. IITG Campus covers an area of about 700 Acres. From my hostel to academic block, the distance was around 2.5 km. All the students travel through bicycles only. Students are not allowed to keep any motor vehicle inside the campus. Relatives can visit the students for overnight stay. For this we just need to book a room in guest house for their stay and they need to carry a valid ID proof to enter the campus. There are food joints available in the campus but are mostly local brands. Only 1-2 national brands are present. IITG also has a hospital and provides first aid medication and treatment. It is sufficient for the campus residents and there is also a multispeciality hospital present just outside the main gate in case of emergency. The doctors and nurses are well qualified. The Campus life is vibrant and energetic. After classes most of the students work in clubs, plays different sports or hang out with friends at the local market. Nightlife is mostly confined around the campus activities. Only 1-2 cafeteria open till 2-3AM in the morning. A large number of students roam or walk around the campus late at night. There are daily bus trips from campus to city. Most students hang out at the food court, tea stall near the lake and at the khokha market near the gate. Outside the campus most students visit Guwahati city during weekends for movies, clubs, parties etc. Students are not allowed to leave the campus after 10PM. If they want to leave they have to take permission from the authorities. Alcheringa is the cultural festival of IITG and one of the largest cultural festivals in North East India. Arman Malik, Amaal Malik, Vishal &Shekhar, Jubin Nautiyal, Zakir Hussain and many more have performed at Alcheringa. Techniche is the annual Technical festival. Nikhil Dsouza, Ases Kaur, Amit Mishra, Samay Raina, Madhur Varli have performed at Techniche recently. There are variety of technical, cultural and sports clubs present in IITG. This include coding club, Finance and economics, consulting, Robotics, Aeromodelling, Astronomy, Electronics, music, drama, Fine arts, Filmmaking, and various sports clubs. I was a part of the Aeromodelling, Astronomy and Quiz club of IITG. In terms of value addition Coding, Electronics, Robotics, Finance, AI are some of the best clubs one can join. There are student exchange programs available with the partner universities in Japan and South Korean. JIFU University offers one such student exchange programs. There is no extra fees for that and if you get selected most of your expenses are beared by the partner university.

Hostel Facilities

2.5

Boys and Girls have separate hostels. Boys and Girls are allowed in each other's hostels but are restricted to only common areas like mess, canteen, juice centre and game rooms. There are 9 boys hostel and 3 girls hostel. For boys I would say my hostel, Manas hostel is the best among all. We are the cultural competitions champions and our hostel has one of the best hostel community of IITG. We are known for our Unity among the students. Hostel allocation takes place randomly. No first come first serve basis. The hostel fee is around ₹7100 per semester which includes ₹1000 hostel rent, ₹2500 electricity and water charges, ₹3000 hostel maintenance charges and ₹600 hostel fund. Only 1st year students face restrictions. For first year students they are not allowed to leave their room after 10PM. And for seniors there is no restrictions. For fooding you have to pay mess charges of ₹18000 per semester. Each hostel has it's separate mess and canteen. Most of the students eat at the mess. The food quality is decent in most of the hostels and the menu changes every month. The hostels are properly guarded. Smaller hostels have 2 guards and larger hostel have around 6-8 guards. During my time there was no sharring of rooms and we were alloted single rooms. Our juniors has double occupancy rooms. Each hostel room is equipped with a fan, study table, chair, almirah and a metal bed. You have to purchase the mattress by yourself. There is LAN connection in every room. All the facilities are pretty decent. Some hostels even has balconies. We have a music room, game room and small library in every hostel. There are common washrooms in hostels. Washroom are cleaned everyday. Hostel rooms are cleaned depending upon the request of the students. We are supposed to fill a form in order to get our room cleaned and we used to get 3 cleaning services per month for free. Mostly 1 washroom is shared by 3 students. Most students stay in hostels only and it was compulsory for students to stay inside the campus.

Exam Structure

During my time it was Covid Lockdown, so the complete process was Online. For admission in Btech at IIT Guwahati you have to take IIT JEE Advanced. After the declaration of the results, counseling starts through JOSSA. You have to pay the counseling fee and upload all the required documents. After you freeze your seat or after final round of counseling, you would receive a mail form the Institute regarding your admission and you need to submit all your documents and scorecards. After verification you have to pay the college fee and after successful payment you would receive the confirmation mail with your official Institute id. For Btech IIT JEE exam and for master's you can apply through GATE or IIT JAM. Any rank of upto 6000 in General category will ensure a seat at IITG. There is no another way except for the government exams to take admission at IITG in UG or PG.

The curriculum designed by UGCF is interesting as well as easy to moderate, providing overall development in an individual. The course content is not so length which makes it enjoyable and improves thinking level of an individual . Actually, I am from Maths hons and The reason for choosing this course is basically the interest which I have developed during my school days. So the good aspects of this course is that it improves Analytical thinking, Mental Ability, thinking power etc. Also it is foundation for many modelling techniques. If we talk about bad aspects; Specialization in Mathematics can limit exposure to other discipline because of its curriculum, Also its Abstract nature may make student struggle in coping with its concept. Also this math is totally pure which is totally different from maths in school The final University exams are conducted twice a year for the respective two semesters of a year. Also the internals were conducted once in both the semester of a year. Usually we have 3-4 classes regularly each having 1 hour duration. The timing vary mostly everyday. On an average class are conducted from 9:45 to 2:05. After classes we have enough free time from 2:05 to 5:00 for sports and other extra curricular activities or visiting Library. The teaching is done usually in general classrooms with chalk and blackboard for basic theory and for some critical concepts we have classes on smart board which is present in every room. Also we have lab classes every week for coding practicals. The Mathematics facility is truly wonderful. They are very much supportive as well as caring. The always wants you to learn something new everyday and be productive in life. They are just too much hardworking, friendly and caring professor. There are only one professor out of 15 mathematics professor which I don't like. The reason is he doesn't want to teach , it seems he thinks teaching as just a government job but not as a Nobel work. I Can't disclose his name because of Privacy reasons Yes there is a attendance criteria in the college which is of about minimum 66.6%. No there is not any penalty for that but if you have short attendance in one semester the next semester you must have to acquire min attendance to compensate previous shortage.

Placements do not happen. No students only apply for NET and other qualifying exams after our college. I am not aware about companies that are preferred. There should be proper internship provided to students.
