I had this general notion that North Indians are not treated well in the South but it took only a few weeks in NIT Trichy to discard this notion as everyone is treated equally here and you won't find any kind of groupism among students. Events and fests bring students together and you realize no one is treating you equally here and everyone is rather friendly.

My friend told me of an incident wherein South Indians were encouraged to play holi with North Indians and it was a sight of pure cultural bliss. From then, North and South Indians started celebrating every festival like Diwali, Durga Pooja, Ganesh Utsav, or Pongal together. Apart from the students, the professors and the local shopkeepers are very supportive of filling the language gap and using English words.

So, I think being mistreated by South Indians should be your last concern at NIT Trichy.

North Indians aren’t treated any differently in NIT Trichy. Students at the institute are friendly. You will get to meet many like-minded people on campus. Try to interact with everyone and not only people from North India.

The localities such as hostel gatekeepers, and shop owners are supportive. They understand that you are from a different region and may have trouble communicating.

There is no discrimination against North-Indians in NIT Trichy. My brother is currently studying in NIT Trichy and being a North Indian he describes his experience as follows.

  • First of all, you will not be alone, as 2–3 people out of every 10 that you find in NIT Trichy will be North Indian. It is quite a considerable number considering there is a 50% reservation for the home state.
  • You will be treated as equal to any other student on the campus but since you are in South India, you may face communication issues sometimes. This is due to the widespread use of Tamil Language in non-academic areas like shopping complex and Mess. However, English is your savior here.
  • Try to make some North Indian friends and be in the group to feel at home. But don’t forget to befriend South Indians too, you might find them even cooler. In a period of 2–3 months, you will even forget that you have come to South India.
  • In the 2018 batch, around 5 departments have North Indian toppers (including my friend). This should give you an indication that everybody is treated equally and their primary focus is on getting a good CGPA.

However, you may face some minor instances where you can feel underprivileged, but remember only rough seas make skillful sailors. This is quite normal to feel in such a way whenever you are away from your home. So, throw that fear away and try to make the most of your stay there.
