Yes, it is possible to prepare for IES (Indian Engineering Services) while pursuing your M.Tech from IIEST Shibpur. However, it will require careful planning, time management, and dedication to both your studies and exam preparation.

Here are some tips that can help you prepare for IES while doing your M.Tech:

  1. Make a study plan: Create a schedule that allocates sufficient time for both your M.Tech coursework and IES exam preparation. It is important to balance both and give priority to your M.Tech coursework.
  2. Use your free time effectively: Use your free time, such as weekends and holidays, to study for the IES exam. Make use of this time to cover topics that are not included in your coursework.
  3. Join coaching classes: Joining coaching classes can be helpful as they provide structured study material, guidance, and support. It can also help you to stay motivated and on track.
  4. Practice previous year's question papers: Practicing the previous year's question papers can help you understand the exam pattern, identify important topics, and improve your time management skills.
  5. Stay focused and motivated: Keep reminding yourself of your goal and stay motivated. Avoid distractions and stay focused on your studies and exam preparation.

Remember, balancing both your M.Tech studies and IES exam preparation can be challenging, but with proper planning and dedication, you can succeed in both.

Time is only the game changer here. It solely depends on your project guide (for 2nd year, mainly) and your time management skills.

If you are ready to take the risk and are dedicated enough for the preparation, then these points might help you -

  • M.Tech is a blend of bachelor and PhD programmes. The first two semesters are just like B.E./B.Tech semesters, where you try to understand in depth the specific parts of your previous bachelor degree subjects in depth as per the requirement of your stream.
  • The classes will be of 3-4 hours every day provided that in between the interval of classes which you can utilize for your own.
  • Utilize the facility of the Library. The ample amount of books and adequate stocks will help.
  • During second year, you should be wise enough to pick the proper project and guide. As few guides are way too precise whereas from others you will get to learn more under their guidance.
  • You have to set your own priorities. Choose professors who will not force you to invest more than 2 hours for your project work.

IIEST being research oriented and with a fine faculty, the research work under its M.Tech course becomes cumbersome to carry out the preparation for IES as most of the guides emphasis on publishing a research paper for which most the students are not interested.

  • Choose your specialization for M.Tech clearly which doesn’t give much workload.
  • Since all M.Tech students have to do the mandatory research work and have to submit a thesis, try to opt for such a guide.
  • The point to be kept in mind is start your preparation from the very beginning so that you don’t feel stressed over it.

Hence, if above points are followed rigorously, one can achieve both M.Tech and IES hand in hand. But, if not then it is a little difficult as you have to manage two things at time.

IIEST Shibpur will provide you with a beautiful, amazing, calm atmosphere perfect for preparation of any competitive exam. If you are sincere enough, have proper motivation and the potential to crack the toughest exam of the nation, these 2 years will be the perfect time for your hard labor.
