Has IIIT Hyderabad grown beyond IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur?
Over the past few years, the Earth has become a global village and technology has been developing at a fast pace. Software Engineers are among the most demanded professionals. That being said, IIITs are slowly and increasingly becoming more preferred than IITs because their curriculum revolves around CS precisely. Their curriculum is highly industry-relevant meeting all demands of the branch.
Now one might ask, why aren’t IITs as successful as IIITs in terms of CS? Well, the major reason is that IITs have a variety of departments not making it possible for the students to focus on one branch. You will see someone from another department like Chemical or Civil competing for a job in the CS or IT sector.
IIITs on the other hand have only 2 departments, CA and IT. The curriculum is crisp and focuses on these two branches only. You don’t have to sacrifice your branch here and can pursue your passion in CS and IT only. Today IIIts CS curriculum gives a considerable edge to IIT Bombay’s CS branch. This is why, IIIT Hyderabad is preferred over IITs today.

IITs cover the whole spectrum of Engineering. While IIIT Hyderabad only offers CS and ECE. So, it’s not fair to say that IIIT H has grown beyond IIT Madras and IIT KGP. But it has carved its own niche in Computer Science.
- CS being their forte, IIIT Hyderabad focuses on the basics of CS from the very beginning of the first year. They put a lot of emphasis on the base courses. During the later years of their degree students are usually through with the fundamentals and can focus on advanced topics.
- IIIT H has an awesome coding culture. If you are a little experienced in coding, then IIIT H can be a great place for you. Many students from the first year take part in ACM-ICPC, each year. If you aren’t interested in coding then you should reconsider joining IIIT H.
- CS graduates from IIIIT H get similar placement packages as IIT Madras and IIT KGP graduates.
Competition is at its peak, at all these institutes. At IIIT H, the competition is only regarding coding, while at IIT M and IIT KGP, it’s for everything. This can be a positive or a negative thing, depending on your expectation.

Ranking and comparing institutions require sound understanding and fair judgment. It is usually seen in newspapers and magazines. This answer does not focus on telling one institution to be better than the other rather intends to give you insight related to the question so that you can decide it on your own.
IIIT-H has only two programs to offer- Computer Science and Electronics. Computer Science is its strength. IIIT-H’s Computer Science program is sought upon mainly because of two reasons:
- The curriculum at IIIT-H is subtle. It focuses on fundamentals and base courses more than others from the first year itself. Students can, therefore, focus on advanced topics by the later years of their engineering.
- IIIT-H produces great programmers yearly. ACM ICPC which is a programming contest has had the students of IIIT-H in its world finals every year. Thus, it is evident that the programming culture here is excellent. Apart from this, these programmers can also turn out to be your education assistant or lab tutors or live adjoining to your room, this will surely motivate you to study and excel. This is unique to IIIT-H. Note that the intake is about 200 students every year and therefore, the community is really small.
When it comes to placements, there is not much difference. Due to their strong grasp of maths and QA, an IIT graduate is also highly placed in banks and consulting firms. Be it IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Madras or IIT Kharagpur, the faculty at all these institutions are top-notch.
Apart from Computer Science and Electronics, there are many other branches of engineering that IITs have to offer such as Civil, Mechanical, Chemical, etc. These branches have less demand in the market due to changes in technology but definitely hold a necessary position.
To say that IIIT Hyderabad has grown beyond IIT Madras and IIT Kharagpur will not be fair but when it comes to Computer Science, IIIT Hyderabad has established itself well in the market.
