CAT exam is a highly competitive exam that is taken by thousands of students every year, and it is widely known that only a small percentage of students are able to crack it and secure a seat in the IIMs.

Based on conversations with current and former IIM students, it is believed that most students who get selected into the IIMs have taken the CAT exam multiple times. Some students take the exam 2-3 times, while others take it 4-5 times or more before they are able to secure a high enough percentile to get selected.

It's important to note that the CAT exam is just one part of the selection process for the IIMs, and candidates are also evaluated based on their academic performance, work experience, extracurricular activities, and performance in the group discussion and personal interview rounds. Therefore, even if a candidate has taken the CAT exam multiple times, they still need to perform well in the other parts of the selection process to secure a seat in the IIMs.

While there is no fixed number of attempts that most IIM students take before getting selected, it is clear that perseverance, hard work, and dedication are key traits that are required to succeed in the highly competitive world of management education in India.

Studied at IIM A (2018)

Having to know some people studying in the top IIMs, and after reading some reviews online, here are some things I got to know about.

I am closely connected to a few reputed CAT coaching institutes across North India and there is no such data available in the public domain, nor any research or survey has been conducted to report any findings of the average number of attempts.

Anyone who has the qualities of being in the top 5 IIMs gets there by their 2nd attempt. In the 3rd attempt in some cases too. But the graph goes down after that.

If someone has given their best shot twice and didn’t make it, probably they should consider other options. We get to see that students graduating from non-IIMs are also succeeding in their careers.

However, if you consider an average person who is a bit serious about the future, two times would be more than enough to crack it with a 99 percentile. Any more attempts than two would be a waste of your time.
