M.Tech Computer Science, Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata (2019)

The difficulty level of M.Tech CS examination in ISI Kolkata is slightly less than GATE. It’s will be easier to crack, if you are good at Mathematics. If you have a strong command of topics like linear algebra, discrete mathematics, probability, and analysis, scoring well in the examination won’t be difficult.

The test includes two papers i.e. MMA and PCB. The MMA paper will have MCQs on Mathematics. The PCB paper is subjective. PCB section A will have Mathematics questions. The rest of the questions will be from a subject of your choosing, i.e. Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering & Technology. You will find the ISI Kolkata M.Tech CS exam syllabus and sample question papers on the official website of the institute.

Cracking the ISI M.Tech CS Entrance exam is comparably easier than securing a top rank at GATE. The advantage lies in solving the subjective questions where you will be allotted more time than what is in GATE. It offers around only 3 mins per question.

In case of the ISI Entrance Exam, it consists of two papers,

  • MMA: This paper consists of the MCQs on mathematics. Mainly, there are 30 questions that are to be solved within around 2 hours. You should be familiar with the undergraduate mathematics level questions. Here are some top recommended books for better preparation,
  • Test on Mathematics at the 10+2 level:Published by ISI, this book is renowned among everyone as “TOMATO”. This book is a great compilation of a variety of questions, alongside previous year entrance exam questions for both B.Stat and B.Math.
  • Higher Algebra by Hall & Knight (Arihant): It effectively helps to prepare for the algebra part.
  • PCB: This paper, out of others, is rather subjective. It has 4 math questions, including proofs from algebra and questions from the calculus section. Moreover, there are other 5 questions from the elective you opt for; such as computer science, statistics, physics, engineering and technology, mathematics, and more.

You can take a look at previous year’s papers to understand the outlook of the exam. It can be easily accessed on the official website of ISI Kolkata.
