How severe is ragging in IIT Madras?

There were several instances of ragging inside the campus of IIT Madras. Strict actions have been taken by the management, keeping a Supreme Court order into account.
The points below give a brief overview of a notice published by the Dean of IIT Madras regarding ragging and student abuse.

• IIT Madras follows the Supreme Court’s order about ragging seriously. It has set up an anti-ragging squad. If anybody is caught in some activity related to the same, he/she will be straightaway expelled from the institute.
• The fact about ragging was intense in the past at IIT Madras, which led the management to take decisions very seriously. It is clearly stated that students can’t take it lightly.
• Even introductions and interactive sessions that may be forcefully held with juniors are against the norms, and so should be avoided.
• According to the Supreme Court’s order, the institute has every right to expel any student who is caught in ragging-related activity. The convict may even have to spend time behind the bars, with an endorsement mentioned in the TC that he/shehas been expelled due to such activities in the institute.

Therefore, there are several efforts taken by the institute to prevent ragging and related activities inside the campus of IIT Madras, which was earlier quite a menace for many freshers.
