An MS by research program at IIT Madras is a very good and fulfilling program. If you want to do a Ph.D. and later post-doc then it will be beneficial for you. It is not similar to the regular M.Tech programs which are more course-based rather than research and generally, M.Tech grads will be preferred for jobs and campus placements to MS grads.

IIT Madras has tried to integrate the placement process of MS students with that of the M.Tech students. However, you cannot take the institute for granted to provide you a job. Though the institute provides the necessary infrastructure and other facilities, placement is a student-driven process.

Usually, MS students focus a lot on publishing their research papers. They also have one year extra to submit their thesis compared to M.Tech students. Thus if an MS student is smart enough he/she can improve his/her CV with the research papers and convince the recruiter regarding the utility of this research in their interviews.

This is a demanding course as you need to have a publication in an international journal for obtaining a degree and those who are focused more on placements may find it a little difficult. Also, M.Tech is more popular in Indian colleges rather than MS and not many institutes are currently providing the course. If you are motivated to do a Ph.D., then this course will suit you better.
