Should I prefer IISER Pune over IIT Madras, Kanpur, or Kharagpur for a BS and an MS in Physics?

BS-MS Dual Degree from Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata

Yes, you can prefer IISER Pune over IITs like Madras, Kanpur, or Kharagpur. Although this choice is not that significant. If you are interested in research, your bachelor’s and master’s degree are just baby steps. The difference between IISERs and IITs is the student crowd. Since IISER is more research-oriented, you will get to meet people who are genuinely interested in research. Before choosing any of these institutes, it’s better if you talk to the current students and get to know the faculty and facilities of these institutes.

Which one is better: IISC Bengaluru BS Programme or IIT Delhi Engineering Physics? Why?

DS
Deeraj Shah Posted On : April 10th, 2023
M.Tech from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (2020)

IISc Bengaluru’s BS Program is still in its infancy but has great scope for development in the near future. In fact, I consider this program even better than the Engineering Physics offered at IIT Delhi. A few strong reasons support my stance on the same area:

  • IISc program curriculum is very flexible and students are at the freedom to opt for any course of their choice provided that they have completed the first year m’s highly dynamic course. Whereas IIT Delhi's EG program has little flexibility as you will be studying physics-related courses throughout the program with little space to choose a different topic
  • Globally, IISc is a well-reputed science institute, and its scientific research and teaching methodology are even better than IIT Delhi.
  • The professors of IISc Bangalore are more experienced and learned than IIT Delhi and their unique pedagogy offers a great learning experience. These professors enjoy worldwide recognition and thus their recommendations are highly valued
  • For someone who is interested in Academics more than jobs, IISc is a very good option. It holds the 35th position globally for providing jobs.

Despite being a new course, I will highly recommend you to go for it owing to the tremendous scope of development it has.

How is the integrated BS-MS in physics program in IIT-Madras?

RM
Ritika Mukharjee Posted On : March 30th, 2023
Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IITM)

The integrated BS-MS 8’ Physics program offered at IIT Madras is a dual degree in reality. The program is a great success because it is under the umbrella of IIT Madras' excellent Physics department. This department is affiliated with CERN and LIGO and has approachable professors and a friendly ambiance for study.

One has to clear JEE to become eligible for this program. The cutoff keeps changing and this program has a small batch size of around 10-15 students. The small batch size is because the program has been newly launched and is still yet to be made known.

The peer group has geniuses from every culture and academic background. IMT might be a rank holder in Karnataka CET while the other may be a 98% in class 12th. There are dynamic discussions among the students and it’s more than one can ask for.

Additional features include INSPIRE scholarship of around INR 60000/- year. You even get the golden opportunity to attend the KVPY Vijyoshi camp.

Ultimately, this program is a dream come true for Physics lovers and is a better option than Engineering for them.

What are the scopes or oppurunities after doing bachelors in economics from IIT kharagpur?

AS
Atul Sharma Posted On : March 28th, 2023
Works at Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP)

Firstly, it’s important to note that IIT Kharagpur does not offer a bachelor's course in Economics, but rather an integrated MSc course. Indeed, the scope of economics is increasing day by day owing to its high demand in the corporate sector.

After completing a Bachelor's degree in Economics from IIT Kharagpur, there are a variety of career opportunities available to you. Some popular choices include:

  • Opting for higher education by pursuing a Master's or Ph.D. in Economics or a related field, such as Finance, Business, or Public Policy.
  • Working in the financial sector, such as investment banking, private equity, or venture capital.
  • Working in a government or international organization, such as the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, or a national central bank.
  • Joining a consulting firm, such as McKinsey, Boston Consulting Group, or Accenture.
  • Working in academia, as a professor or researcher in Economics.
  • Joining an NGO that focuses on economic development, poverty reduction, or environmental sustainability.

Additionally, Economic students tend to have a lot of free time and thus can utilize the same in pursuing a micro or minor course in other departments like CSE or Mathematics. This is helpful only if they are willing to get Finance and Analytics jobs. They can also prepare for exams like CFA which have numerous job prospects.
