Chennai Mathematical Institute (2016)

CMI offers a more Mathematics oriented program. For pure Mathematics, it is a better option.

  • CMI curriculum has Maths/CS, and Maths/Physics options. At IISc first three semesters are common. During these semesters you will be studying Engineering, Material Science, EVS, Humanities, etc.
  • CMI Maths syllabus is more theory-oriented. You will get to learn abstract concepts. IISc follows a more balanced curriculum. During the first three years, you will need to attend both theory and lab classes.

CMI Maths framework and teaching methodology are more suited for students who are genuinely interested in Mathematics.

MSc in Computer Science, Chennai Mathematical Institute (CMI) (2020)

In terms of reputation and scope after pursuing the course, both IISC Bangalore and CMI are equivalent. If you want to pursue a career in pure mathematics CSI offers more opportunities via better peer groups and abstract treatment in mathematics. In CMI one must take computer science or physics alongside maths and has to complete the course seriously. But if you are interested in the combination of maths and physics then you can apply to IISC Bangalore because the college is better at an undergraduate level in the teaching of science.

  • Duration and Admission:IISC Bangalore offers BS (Bachelor of Science) in Mathematics for a duration of 4 years. The selection of the program is done on the basis of marks obtained in KVPY exam/IIT Mains/IIT Advanced/NEET. The duration period for the B.Sc Mathematics in CMI is 3 years and for selection, the institute conducts an entrance test.
  • Course Curriculum:IISC has both theoretical and practical focus, in the first year of the course, students have to attend lectures as well as laboratory sessions. Whereas in CMI the course curriculum is more theoretical. The total course fee at IISC and CMI is respectively INR 75,000 and INR 6 lakhs.
  • Placements:The top recruiters of IISc Bangalore include giant names like TATA, Reliance, Maxo India, etc. The highest package went up to INR 40 LPA and the average package went up to INR 15 LPA during 2019 placement. Approximately 25% of the batch got between INR 20 LPA to 30 LPA in the final placements. Some of the major recruiters at CMI are Credit-Suisse, Ernest & Young, TRDDC, Adobe, Zen Drive, Teradata, etc. In 2019 campus placement the median CTC was 14.8 LPA and the highest was 16.54 LPA.
