It is important to note that there is a discrepancy in the Indian B-School scenario regarding work experience. During the admission process, college professors conducting interviews often favor candidates with prior work experience and award them extra points.

However, when it comes to recruiting, employers have different preferences. They tend to prefer freshers over individuals with prior work experience. This is because they believe that those with prior experience may not be as adaptable or suitable for certain roles. For example, in marketing profiles, recruiters believe that the best route into marketing is through a couple of years in sales, which often involves traveling to rural areas. For finance profiles, recruiters believe that those with prior work experience may not be willing to work the long hours required in finance.

In India, recruiters prefer freshers with up to 11 months of work experience over individuals with a large amount of experience.

It is worth mentioning that this preference for freshers may not hold true in foreign MBA programs. The distinction lies between a one-year executive MBA program and a traditional two-year MBA program in India. In the West, MBA programs are seen as a way to advance one's career, while in India they are often viewed as a means of securing high-paying jobs.

It is recommended that individuals with at least one year of work experience be admitted to an MBA program, as this will provide them with a clearer understanding of what they hope to gain from the course, rather than seeing it simply as a means to secure a job.

IIM MBA - HR

In most Indian B-schools interviews are observed to prefer candidates with some prior work experience. In that case, as mostly observed, candidates alike are often awarded some extra markings in their interviews.

Be that as it may, several recruiters also prefer freshers and the reasons can primarily center around two main causes.

  • Marketing Profiles: Various recruiters believe that the route to successful marketing is investing a couple of years in sales. Sales consist of a massive rate of traveling, usually to the rural areas. It is easier for the recruiters to work with freshers rather than individuals with prior work experience.
  • Finance Profiles: There are several recruiters who are of the opinion that candidates that arrive with prior work experience are unlikely to invest more than the usual working hours to the sector in finance. It is because, as they believe, candidates alike are already set in their working ways.

Having said that, recruiters mostly prefer freshers who have work experience extended up to 11 months, rather than candidates who have work experience more than that in India.

Indian students mostly look at MBA programmes as a source to obtain higher placements, students from foreign countries do MBA to upscale their career.

  • It is better if you do your MBA after 1 year of work experience. That way you will have a better idea of what you want for your future.
