B.Tech Mechanical Engineering, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal

If we only consider placements, then CSE is the best branch in NIT Surathkal. This branch has a great placement record. NIT Surathkal CSE average package stays around INR 15-16 LPA.

If you want to join Govt sectors, Mechanical, Civil or Electrical are comparably better. You need to prepare for IES, for these jobs. Chemical Engineering is a good option if you want to join PSUs. In private sector, Chemical Engineering has limited scope.

My sister is doing her IT course at NIT Surathkal and it is a good department. It has good branches and the placements for each are also nice. The institute itself ranks #13 on the NIRF ranking scale and the campus is said to be very beautiful and replete with state-of-the-art facilities.

For a reflection on the different branches, read the following points:

  • The CSE branch is known for its excellent placements. The statistics show that it has a 100% placement rate and the average package offered in 2020 was INR 10.08 LPA. The competition is also high in this one because of the brilliant classmates.
  • The IT branch is a good one at NIT and it has a 90-100% placement rate as well and the average salary was 14.06 LPA and students get the same placement opportunities as the CSE students do.
  • Another branch similar to CSE in terms of the competition is the ECE or Electrical department. It has very good faculty members who support dedicated students in getting through for higher studies or access good research projects.
  • Mechanical students go through a very hectic schedule that requires some planning. The placements for this branch are mostly done through software companies and a few core companies.

As for the Chemical and Civil branches; both are good options for higher studies afterward as the professors notice dedicated students and recommend them for studies abroad or to research institutes.

Also, there is not much information available on Metallurgy and Mining, although the placements are fine and you can get into management profiles with the degree in hand.

The final call is always yours, depending on your interests but if you're getting CSE or IT, then definitely go ahead with it.
