Studied at Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IITGN)

If you're considering the B.Tech program at IIT Gandhinagar, here are some points to note about their curriculum:

  • Probability and Statistics course: The curriculum includes a course in Probability and Statistics (MA202), which is useful not just for engineering but also for fields like finance and consulting.
  • Mathematics courses: The program offers Mathematics courses up to the 2nd year, which is important for understanding advanced Mathematics concepts required for engineering.
  • Intro to Analog and Digital Electronics course: The course in 1st year is mandatory, which is beneficial for students interested in electronics and related fields.
  • Economics course: The curriculum includes an Economics course in the 1st year, which is a plus point as this is usually a hard-to-get humanities elective in other IITs.
  • Standard ChemE courses: The curriculum includes all the usual courses in Chemical Engineering such as Chemical Reaction Engineering, Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Mechanics, Separation Processes, Control Systems, and Process Design.
  • Electives: The program offers elective courses for students to explore other areas of interest.

There are some differences compared to other IITs, such as:

  • No transport phenomena course: This course is not included in the curriculum, but it's not a big deal as it's covered in other courses.
  • Solid mechanics course: Instead of the usual engineering mechanics course, IIT Gandhinagar has a solid mechanics course, which has its pros and cons.
  • Physics course: The Physics course could benefit from including the foundations of Quantum Mechanics.

Overall, the curriculum is pretty standard and solid, with some added benefits such as the Economics course and Mathematics courses. It's at par with most other IITs as far as engineering disciplines are concerned.

B.Tech Electrical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (2020)

One of my acquaintances was taken aback when a similar question was asked to her.

The curriculum of IIT Gandhinagar has always been a topic of discussion both amongst its faculty and its students. Compared to the other IITs, the curriculum of IIT Gandhinagar looks very different. IIT Gandhinagar is a new and growing university that has taken a different approach in providing education. They do not want to follow in the footsteps of their counterpart; the other IITs.

It allows students the flexibility to pursue their passions and interests to the fullest extent possible. The institute wants them to persevere for their goals with every bit of energy they have.

Not everyone would obviously be interested in engineering and the institute understands that. They give the students the opportunity to align their courses with their goals and interests.

A management minor can be a good option for someone who is interested in management. Students can pursue honors too.

Mechanical students are known to do as many as ten courses in computer science in their B.Tech as electives. The option of dual degree has also been newly introduced where students can go for B.Tech in two disciplines. There are students of Mech+CS and Electronics+Mech.
