The required GATE rank depends upon various parameters like
People who are graduating in 3-4 years are lucky as both IOCL and ONGC are planning to recruit in bulk because of massive retirements in both the companies.
The mechanical and chemical branches are expected to have the most vacancies. Candidates will be called in a 1:5 ratio and thus, interviews will be the major determining factor of your selection. If you are unable to showcase your knowledge and talent during the interview, even a single-digit rank cannot guarantee your admission. A minimum of 40% marks are required to pass the interview.
So if you get a call for the interview, don’t let your rank discourage you or even make you overconfident.
If you rank in the range of 100-200, you should receive interview calls from PSUs like ONGC and IOCL.
Here are the cutoff trends for ONGC and IOCL for the last few years.
ONGC -
IOCL -
The final selection to any of these two PSU depends on your performance in GD and personal interview.
If you hold a rank under 250-300, you will get all PSU interview calls. But if you are preparing exclusively for GATE(not IES), make sure you keep in contact with books. Don’t abandon the habit of reading books after GATE. Most people leave their studies after GATE and don’t perform well in the interview. One of my friends works in NTPC. Discussed below are his experiences during the interviews.
Getting PSU interview calls is not that difficult. Converting it to the final selection is tougher.
NTPC:
IOCL:
ONGC:
Mechanical is generally the second department that was most preferred. The interview call usually goes out to 400 ranks. If you have a rank under 140, you are likely to get selected. The total number of seats is 40 (maximum). For another dept., Mmo, cementing, selection usually goes up to the rank of 300.
BPCL:
The ranks listed above are for the mechanical branch and general category only. Hope this gives a general idea about the rank required to get selected for PSUs.
